Army Deployed Gift History in Belvidere, Illinois began with the arrival of the Union Army in September of 1861. The town of Belvidere was quickly renamed Chicago after the U.S. victory at Gettysburg in July of that year. The city was a staging ground for soldiers and their supplies as they moved through Illinois and Ohio before arriving in Michigan on September 17th to fight in the Civil War. The gift history of the army deployed gift shop begins with General David Dixon’s purchase of a small gift shop located on State Street near Unadilla Creek in 1864. Dixon’s store continued to carry gifts for soldiers until 1865 when it was sold to Mrs. Hanks who operated it until 1887 when it became known as The Gilt Shop, Inc.. Mrs. Hanks donated her business assets to the community in memory of her husband John Hanks who had died during World War I.. In 1922, Toni Burch bought The Gilt Shop fromMrs. Hanks and reopened it as Toni Burch’s Military Apparel Store which continues to operate today.. From 1924-1938, Toni Burch also operated an aircraft parts store off US 191 east of town which became known as “The Air Force Store” after World War II ended .. After World War II, many soldiers left Chicago for living and fighting overseas where they brought home their military equipment and memorabilia which was stored at various points throughout Illinois until 1948 when it was moved to Decatur, Illinois where it is now preserved under storage conditions.. It is interesting to note that many items from this period have been auctioned off including uniforms worn by American troops during World Wars I & II, medals given out by generals during these wars, pieces from air force planes used during those wars, etc... In 1951-1952, Mr. & Mrs. Bob Stroud acquired ownership of The Gilt Shop from Mr. & Mrs. Stroud’s father-in-law William Averill who had owned the business since its inception.. In 1984-1985, Msgr./Rev Dr George Wexler purchased ownership from Msgr./Rev Dr George Wexler and reopened the shop as Our Lady Of Victory Chapel Giftshop which continues today.. In 1988-1989 Rev /Dr Tom Fenton took over operation from Rev /Dr Tom Fenton who had been running part time operations since 1986 .. During our current tenure we have carried on special events such as Christmas sales (2006), Veterans Day Sale (2007), Easter egg hunt (2008), 4thof JULY sale (2009) among others.....

Belvidere is a small town in McLean county, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Belvidere is located on the south side of the country and north of Chicago. It is bordered by Aurora to the east, Glen Ellyn to the west, and Wheaton to the south. The first European settlers in what is now Belvidere were Frenchmen who arrived in 1763. The current name for the town was given to it by General Anthony Wayne during his campaigns against Native Americans in 1785-87. In 1836, when Illinois became a state, Belvidere became part of McLean County. Belvidere has a rich history that dates back to its earliest days as a settlement. One of its most famous natives is Wesley Hapgood who helped found Urbana, Illinois (now University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). He also served as township clerk and treasurer for many years before his death in 1907. Other early settlers include John Fenton who founded one ofthe first retail stores in Belvidere and built an addition to his store which still stands today; Ebenezer Morse who operated a millinery shop until 1861; James Wickersham who opened a grocery store; Augustus Herrman (1815-1892), an immigrant from Bohemia; and George Ladd (1825-1912), an insurance salesman from Detroit Heights, Michigan. Many residents are descendants of these pioneers which has led to strong community ties within Belvidere throughout its history. In 1872, two brothers named Edward Ayer settled in what is now Belvidere after finding land grants totaling 640 acres available for purchase near Geneva Lake outside present day Aurora Township on Chicago's South Side. They began construction on their farmhouse which still stands today and raised crops until 1893 when they sold out their land holdings and moved away from home for good citing health reasons but remaining lifelong residents of BelvideRE still visit often! In 1903 Edward's grandson Sidney Ayer took up farming there with some changes including building an attached garage/workshop complex that continues today as well as landscape rehabilitation work done on several homes adjacent thereto over time...overall it’s been said that this old house can be seen seen much more frequently than ever before thanks largely tosidney ayers son johnny
