Belvidere, Illinois was once a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 6,000 in 1870 and increased to 25,000 by 1910. It experienced a rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s as agricultural production grew in the area and new businesses were established. The town's first incorporated structure was built in 1868 by Captain John Prentice. A school and post office were both founded that year. By 1880, Belvidere had a population of 30 residents and two churches. The town's growth continued through the years with more businesses opening up, until it reached its peak in 1920 with a population of 100 residents. However, the town's prosperity began to decline after World War I; Belvidere lost its economic importance due to changes in agriculture which led to decreased demand for goods made from landlocked areas such as Illinois. In 1960, Belvidere had an estimated population of 15 people living on an acreage which consisted of only 2 homes. By 2000, however, Belvidere's population hadgrown to over 200 people living on an acreage which consists of over 10 homes. Belvidere has experienced some significant changes throughout its history including becoming part of Wheeling-Charleston-Erie Railroad District #2 in 1881; being annexed into Chicago by annexation in 1912; experiencing multiple name changes (Belvinopolis (1910), Bensenville (1915), Cicero (1920)), reductions in its size due to incorporation into other townships within Cook County during the 1930s-1950s; becoming part of Plainfield Township when Plainfield Township was created within Cook County on April 22nd 1959; becoming part of Vandalia Township when Vandalia Township was created within Cook County on December 5th 1959; and most recently undergoing annexation into Adams Township on January 1st 2020
