Bellwood, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellwood was first settled in 1836 by Methodist missionaries and settlers from Tennessee. The name "Bellwood" comes from a bluff overlooking the river near the original town site. The community had one school and two churches until it closed its doors in 1984 for lack of funds to keep them open. Today, there are only a few that remain: First Baptist Church (founded in 1925), White Sands Baptist Church (founded in 1951), and Messiah Lutheran Church (founded in 1948). The history of Bellwood goes back to 1836 when Methodist missionaries came to the area with plans to start a new religious congregation here. When they arrived, they found an empty bluff with access to both the river and large tracts of land south of Springfield which would soon be filled with people seeking new opportunities and opportunities for their religion. In 1837-38, some settlers started building what would become known as Post Office #2 on present day Fourth Street; this building still stands today as part of the White Sands Baptist Church property line fenceline just north of State Avenue. In 1850-51, Bellwood residents founded Belmont School which served grades K-12 until 1984 when it closed due to budgetary constraints within the community after years of growth that saw enrollment reach 447 students by 1998! After four decades without any closures or conversions while other local communities experienced rapid growth and consolidation – all while Bell Wood residents continued living close by – it was announced on July 2nd, 2018 that Bellwoods last school will be closing its doors effective September 1st after more than 50 years serving students from PreK through 12th grade! Today’s bellwether community stands testament not just to immense perseverance but also innovative thinking skills essential for creating successful businesses over time – something that has been evident throughout many generations emanating from those who have calledbell wood home: Mrs. Alice Easterling (née Smith) currently directs worship services at First Baptist Church; her husband Rev Dr Jerry Easterling(died 2008) led Messiah Lutheran during its early days; his son Joshua Easterling(a graduate OFR St Louis University & current Pastor at White Sands Baptist Church) took over leadership duties at Belmont School upon graduation; Mr John Cook (founder/co-owner/operator/senior pastor& founder & CEOof CookLutheranChurchUSA) has been instrumental in developing CookLutheran into one of America's favorite evangelical denominations since becoming affiliated with The Presbyterian church several decades ago; among countless others whose names we cannot mention here who have made significant contributions or donations over time are Tom Besser who founded Bread ‘N’ Roses Cafe along State Avenue - now long gone but never forgotten – he left behind numerous Legacy gifts such as furniture & appliances ; Lisa Weisman who continues operations outfitting pre-schoolers thru 12th grade right up until today’s grand finale processional service held each year on Good Friday evening inside First Baptist Chapel - an event nearly impossible without her hard work (& dedication!)during these many years bell woods residents always enjoy !!!!!
