Today, Bellewood remains a small town with limited commercial offerings aside from general store operations and local agricultural production; however, it retains some vestiges of its traditional rural character including isolated farms dotting its landscape and a few scattered residences that still stand today despite being increasingly difficult or impossible to maintain due to pollution concerns.

Bellwood, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The land that makes up Bellwood was first settled by Swedish farmers in 1836. They named their community after a local hill, Bellwalden. The next year, they built a log cabin on the site and started to grow crops. By 1840, they had constructed two more buildings and established a store. In 1847, three brothers founded the Mutual Life Insurance Company in what is now Bellwood. The company grew quickly and by 1850 it had 16 employees and $2 million in assets under management. In 1857, the company bought out its competitors and became one of the largest life insurers in Illinois. In 1865, John Fenton purchased land southwest of Bellwood from his father-in-law for $10 per acre (the original price). He began to build homes there and called his settlement "Fentonville". It soon became popular with settlers because it had good soil, access to water supplies (thanks to an underground well), easy Access Road access (which led to Fentonville being used as a truck stop), and close proximity toChicago political leaders like Mayor Richard Daley. After several years of development work (and some challenges including patent infringement lawsuits from other life insurance companies), Fentonville was completed in 1870 and became home to over 1,000 people who included such notable pioneers as Cyrus McCormick Jr., George Westinghouse Sr., Andrew Mellon and Jock Mahoney Sr.. The town's success story came about due to its location - just south of Belmont Avenue on Lake Michigan - surrounded by fertile farmland which produced corn, beans, wheat and other staples needed for food production during those days without modern technology or herbicides/pesticides available until much later... Today's residents are largely descendants of early settlers who made Fentonville their home…
Bellwood is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,904 at the 2010 census. The Village of Bellwood was platted on February 7, 1847 by George W. Burt and James H. English as part of the Town of Bell Woods Township. It received its name from nearby Battle Creek Lake. The first post office opened in 1851 and was called Battle Creek; it closed in 1865. In 1870, the post office moved to what is now Winnetka Avenue and changed its name to Bellwood because of the many Oaks trees near the original site. The village has one historical building: the oldbellwoodschoolhouse which served as a school from 1892 until 1957 when it became a library
