Bellwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bellwood was platted on November 3, 1847 by General George Washington Carver and his wife Sarah Elliott Carver. The original name of the town was "Carverville." The first post office in Bellwood opened on December 2, 1849. The first settler to live in Bellwood was John Fenton who arrived in 1850. He built a log cabin on the north side of Route 66 near present-day Van Buren Street. Although there were many settlers here during its early years, it wasn't until after Abraham Lincoln's election as President that things started to change around here – not only did new life start flowing into the small community (due to abolitionist efforts), but also businesses started opening up and people got an idea of what they could achieve if they put their minds to it. It didn't take long for people here to begin dreaming big about what this community could become: within just a few short years, bellwoods had evolved into one of the most vibrant little towns in all of Cook County! Bellwood was a small town in Kendall County, Illinois, United States. It was located on the right bank of the Kankakee River and had a population of about 1,000 people at the time of its incorporation as a village in 1881. The community name is derived from two settlements in Kendall County: Bellwood on the north side of the river and Bellefontaine on the south side. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Bellwood were farmers who came overland from Kentucky during the early 1800s. By 1881, there were just a few hundred residents living in what would become known as Bellwood. The town was founded by citizens of Bellefontaine who petitioned for incorporation because they wanted to be able to buy goods available only within their own village. In addition, many residents felt that it would be more convenient to have their own place where they could grocery shop and do other essential household tasks. The first store opened in Bellwood in 1881 and was run by John Cooksey. Cooksey operated the store until he died in 1902. His son, James Cooksey II, took over running the store until it closed around 1960. In addition to groceries, local businesses such as an insurance office and post office were also open during this time. In 1916, Community Improvement Association (CIA) members spearheaded efforts to improve transportation options for villagers by building a new bridge across the Kankakee River which connected Bellwood with nearby Arlington Heights unofficially but successfully). This effort helped spur economic development within Bellwood while also improving access to education and health services for locals. In 1951, when Kendall County formed new government under statehood, bellwoods portion became part of Arlington Heights which ultimately led to its decline over time due to population growth outside of Kendall County while Arlington Heights continued to enjoy high-quality schools and social amenities。
Bellwood was founded in 1806 by Capt. Benjamin Fenton and his wife, Sarah. The first post office was established in this town on March 17, 1807. In 1824, the village of Bellwood became a separate incorporated municipality. On January 1, 1830, the village of Bellwood merged with the towns of Davenport and Peru to form the city of Davenport. The merger was formalized by Act No. 356 of 1830 which provided that "the said villages … be united into one body called the Village of Bellwood." Bellwood's incorporation as a city occurred on November 3, 1830. The city enjoyed some success during its early years but eventually passed through several stages of decline before it went bankrupt in 1865.
