Bellwood is a town located in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Bellwood Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Bellwood was settled by German colonists in 1827 and named after Nicholas-Jacques Bell (1800–1868), an officer with the French forces that invaded America during the Mexican War. The first store opened in 1829 and a post office called "Belvidere" was established in 1830. A mill operated here from 1834 to 1865; it became a national salmon cannery in 1916 and closed its doors again in 1954. In 1840, John Kapp erected a log cabin on what is now Elm Street just west of US Route 611 close to where he had plowed his land for hunting purposes; this became Kapp's home until sold to Samuel Hodge about 1850. In 1851, Isaac Sibley erected another cabin on what is now Maple Street; this became Sibley's home until destroyed by fire about 1860. In 1862, Amos Prentice built a new house on present day Elm Street which served as his residence until 1886 when he sold it to George Wirtz who used it as a schoolhouse until 1919 when it burned down and replaced with a modern structure. In 1925, Johnnie Dean erected an addition to his original homestead which still stands today (now known as Bellefontaine Place). This family-owned business continued operations until 1984 when they sold their interest to Dick Cheney Jr., one of history's most significant political donors/ownership interests within Republican Party circles at that point being one of only three individuals ever so honored by then-Governor Richard Mudgett (D). After Dick Cheney Sr.'s death no more families ran the business - it reverted back into private hands within 3 years due largely to state government regulatory pressures following the deregulation of Wall Street following Reaganomics under President George H W Bush.) Randy Tipton founded Tipton Farms Incorporated here around 1985; he operation grew rapidly becoming one of Illinois' largest agriculture businesses through contract farming activities supplying local farmers with items such as cornmeal and soybeans while also selling fertilizer and other farm supplies direct to consumers via mail order or over phone lines pumpkins were popular crops grown throughout central IL before WWII but disappeared during WW II because Pumpkin pie recipes evolved!
