Bellwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name of Bellwood comes from two places in the community: one is a stream called "Bellefontaine" and another is Belleforest Oaks Golf Course. The first place was named for John Bell (1785-1852), who donated land to the village in 1868. The second place was named after Dr. Samuel Hennepin (1781-1857), who donated land to the village in 1893. The Village of Bellwood was incorporated on November 3, 1907, by an act of the General Assembly of Illinois. In 1933, following annexation by neighboring Park Ridge, bellwoods civil authorities were combined with those of Park Ridge and selected other communities within Cook County as a consolidated authority known as "Cook County." On December 15, 1934, all civil authorities within Cook County were reorganized into a single agency known as the "Department of Community Affairs". This agency became operative on January 1, 1935. The history of the USAF's air force deployed gift program is a long and winding one. The first time the USAF deployed gift program was in 1951, when the USAF established its own gift shop in Germany to provide overflow gifts for American military personnel stationed there. This program continued intermittently until 1957, when it was re-established as a regular cadre ofift programs. The USAF's air force deployed gift program has been variously categorized as an 'in-home gifting' or ' overseas gifting' Program. The 'in-home gifting' Program refers to the custom of giving gifts directly to soldiers and sailors stationed at home, while the 'overseas gifting' Program refers to sending gifts direct to service members stationed abroad. Both Programs were discontinued in 2003 following Major General Michael Hayden's restructuring of U.S. Air Force command structures which eliminated many traditional Gift Programs within the organization. It is worth noting that although both these Programs are now defunct, they have not completely disappeared from AFB culture; rather, they continue to be popularly used by commanders and staff members as part of their overall Christmas Eve tradition -Operation Red Mistletoe -of distributing small presents to their troops/ Sailors during December 1st through 3rd (the date traditionally associated with Christmas).
