Belleville, Illinois is a town of about 50,000 people in theIllinois River Valley. The community was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk and his wife Anna Bowen Polk as a wagon stop on the river near what is now Belleville. In 1841, the town moved to its current site and became an agricultural center with plantations and cattle drives. The first coffee house in Belleville opened in 1847. The first coffee mill was built in 1865. Over time, Belleville became known for its robust black beans, roasted here onsite over an open fire or on large coals obtained from nearby mines. By 1870, the population of Belleville had reached 100 residents; it had also become one of the leading coffee-growing towns in America. During World War II, Belleville was home to two United States Army Air Forces airfields: Fort Sam Houston (now San Antonio) and Belle Isle (now Moline). These airfields were used for B-24 Liberator bomber operations during World War II; they are today mainly used for agriculture activities. In 1945, after World War II ended, Belleville's economy shifted towards manufacturing because of decreases in world demand for coffee beans due to recessionary conditions throughout Europe and North America. As a result of this shift, many small businesses closed down or converted to manufacturing instead of selling their products online or through other channels such as retail stores or catalogs like Jamba Juice . The first department store in Belleville was Journeys which opened on state Street in 1896. By 1927 all but one of the original stores had closed down or moved away from their original locations due to competition from larger retailers chains like Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Inc., JCPenney & Co., Kmart Corporation and Sam's Club Stores Ltd.. After World War II many small businesses closed unable to compete with larger stores that came online during that time period such as Walmart Supercenter etc..
