The history of shooters in Belleville, Illinois goes back to the early 1800s. The first gunsmith in Belleville was Nicholas Roussel and his shop was located on North State Street. Roussel also built the first shotgun in Belleville and later became a firearms dealer. In 1851, A.F. Herndon opened a gun store on South State Street which soon became known as the Herndon Store. The Herndon Store operated until 1916 when it was replaced by the present day Belmont Arms & Ammunition Company. In 1907, Wm. Matson began selling shotguns at his store which eventually evolved into what is now called Belmont Shotguns Incorporated today.Belleville's first Pistol Club was founded in 1903 and membership grew rapidly thereafter. By 1922, Belleville had over fifty members who enjoyed practicing their shooting skills at various ranges around town." In 1927, Belleville experienced its first homicide with Julius Caesar Martin shot and killed by John Ellerbe at an ice cream social in the basement of the old Masonic Lodge on North State Street corner Elmwood Avenue. That year saw a stampede of handguns from Chicago dealers into town after prohibition was repealed federally; many guns were sold short during prohibition because there wasn't enough ammo available to meet demand nationally! Gun enthusiasts from all over the Midwest descended upon Belleville looking for an opportunity to buy new guns before Prohibition expired on December 15th, 1929. Many people who live near or have ancestry near Belleville believe that prohibition led to some interesting firearm chemistry that helped create some of America's most famous firearms such as Ruger Model 10 rifles (John Dillinger used one), Colt Python revolvers (Sherlock Holmes uses one) and Glock pistols (Adamantly).
