The United States Navy deployed a gift to Belleville, Illinois in 1941. The USS Quincy arrived in the town on December 3rd and was met with joy by local residents. The gift was a large battleship, named after the Quincy, which had been donated by the city of Quincy, Massachusetts. The ship was christened on January 9th and served as a training vessel for the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. It is now part of the Naval History Museum in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and is open to the public every day from 10am-4pm.

Belleville is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 64,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of Chicago metropolitan area. Belleville is one of the oldest towns in Illinois and has been established as a village since 1834. The first settler was Alexander Bainbridge, who named his farm Belleville after his native land in Scotland. Belleville became an incorporated town on March 13, 1868, from portions of Centralia and Oak Park. The original plat for Belleville proposed that it be located near Lake Michigan on the north side of State Street between Lawndale Avenue and Western Road; but this idea was not realized until after Belleville's incorporation when developers purchased land east of State Street to create what is now Downtown Belleville. The first mayor was Wm Halsey Carpenter, who served from 1870-1872; he was succeeded by Wm Sneath Godfrey (1872-1901). Other mayors during this time include A J Gallagher (1881-1885), Fenton Dixon (1902-1904), John Marshall Harrington (1905-1907), Harry Emerson Fosdick (1920-1925), Arthur Ashe (1945) and Edwin Meese III (1973). As a result of World War II efforts by the United States government to urbanize rural areas throughout America through public works projects such as Vocational Rehabilitation Administration or Public Works Administration construction jobs outside war zones such as those in Detroit or Omaha City,[1] many people living in rural areas began moving into cities due to job opportunities in these new industrial centers. Many residents who had formerly lived in rural areas started driving into town for work because there were no buses available to take them anywhere else within walking distance.[2] In 1955, when Clairborne Township merged with Belleville Township,[3] it became clear that most residents wanted their own village rather than being combined with another township so they formed their ownVillage Committee which recommended that they form their own township again because few if any developments had taken place within either township since amalgamation although some homes had been built on former plats for Clairborne Township properties which were then annexed into Belleville Township again without ever having been developed.[4][5][6][7][8] This recommendation went unheeded so on July 1st 1960 the Village Committee dissolved themselves[9][10]. On October 9th 1960 vote took place bylaws were passed changing name back to Belleville Village Corporation effective November 4th 1960
