Belleville is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,992 at the 2010 census. Belleville is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Belleville Historical Society has been organizing historical events in Belleville for over 40 years and continues to create new opportunities for residents and tourists to experience history in one of the most spectacular setting in Lake Michigan country. Belleville was founded by Nicholas Morrell and others on November 10, 1836 as a small farming community named after the French city of Vichy (present-day Orleans). Morrell had come from New England and had settled near Vandalia on the Ohio River when he decided to move westward. On July 1, 1839, he organized what would become Belleville Township with a land grant from General James K. Polk that included some of present-day Kane County. The first post office was established in Belleville on October 6, 1840. The first Store building still stands today and is used as a museum store today. From its beginning, Belleville grew rapidly due to its location opposite Moline on the river and its easy access to transportation including boatloads of goods transported downriver each day by steamboats or wagon trains called "the Dortmunder Express." In 1845, Belleville became one of two towns in Kane County (the other being Peoria) that were incorporated as villages; both were chartered under state law with village status limited only to those having a population over 500 people at the time of incorporation. During World War II much activity took place within or around Belle Vernon which resulted in numerous buildings located there becoming military barracks such as Camp Evans which housed up to 4,000 troops during World War II and also served as an airfield for American bombers flying into Germany; it remains one of Illinois' largest military installations still extant outside Chicago proper
