Batavia, Illinois is a small town in Kosciusko County, Illinois, United States. The population was 627 at the 2010 census. It is the home of the Batavia-Lafayette Airport. The area that now makes up Batavia was first settled by French Canadians in 1812. The name "Batavia" comes from the Iroquois word batea meaning "place where there is a stream." A post office called Batavia was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1837, General James K. Polk sent an American force to Plattsmouth War (1837–38) against France and its Indian allies; these forces were commanded by General David Potter and Major John Purdy respectively. On October 9, 1837, General Potter's force attacked an outpost of the French on the present site of Batavia while supplies were being unloaded from a ship anchored offshore. The fortifications of this post had been previously built by Captain Pierre Dupleix de la Salle for his own use during the Invasion of Canada (1791). After a battle lasting three hours, which saw fifteen American casualties and two French killed, Potters' forces retreated with their prizes intact to Fort Dearborn on Lake Michigan east of Chicago; here they began to load supplies for their next campaign against France which would take place two months later under Webster Expeditionary Force command under MacArthur. Aftermath: In November 1840 Congress passed an act authorizing $25 million for military purposes within ten years; $10 million immediately went into effect and raised another $20 million over five years culminating in $35 million available as Treasury notes by July 1861 On May 10th 1861 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No.–1185 ordering all United States citizens who were citizens or residents of any foreign country who had fought or served in insurrection or rebellion against our authority since April 14th 1861 to return home forthwith without delay* (*An estimated 2/3rds (~700 thousand people) complied with this order.) Batavia is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 548 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Town of Batavia was organized on November 3, 1836, from the communities of Burr Ridge and Willowbrook. The name "batavia" is thought to be derived from the Sauk word "batawa" meaning "a place for hunting". The first settler in what would become Batavia was Nicholas Webster who arrived in 1837. Webster built a cabin on the site that now houses the Batavia Library and Museum. He also constructed a mill which he operated until 1840 when it burned down. In 1841, Methodist minister David Ladd discovered gold near Galesburg and started mining there himself. This led to increased exploration of nearby lands and by 1846, batavian had developed into an agricultural center with several stores, two churches (one Presbyterian), three schools (grades 1-12), one hospital (1851), four smokehouses (1857-59) - including one that still stands today - and six farms totaling . In 1865, as part of efforts to move settlers away from central cities towards less polluted areas around them, Batavia became one of many towns in Kane County to establish itself as a village. That year saw the construction of what is now known as Main Street which connected town square with Commercial Street running along its eastern border; this street remains today as one of downtown's most important thoroughfares. By 1880-81 there were six businesses operating in batavia: five grocery stores/harbor markets plus a druggist named Isaac Tingley whose store occupieduda building on North Main Street between State and Washington Streets facing Sterling Road; this building still stands today next door to Hennepin Brewing Company
