The history of the national guard in Batavia, Illinois can be traced back to 1881. The first national guard unit was organized in this town under the command of Major General John P. Richardson. At that time, Batavia was a small village located about five miles north of Chicago. The regiment consisted of thirty-six soldiers and six officers. It was not until 1902 that the national guard unit was redesignated as the 1st Regiment of Batavia Volunteer Infantry. During World War I, the 1st Regiment served in France and Belgium as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. Upon its return toBatavia, it became operational on January 5, 1919 and soon distinguished itself by its valor in battle against German forces. Not long after its activation, however, the regiment were deployed to China where they served with distinction through engagements at Nanking and Shanghai. Upon their return home in 1920, members of the regiment were Reformed Episcopalians who had come south to help rural communities rebuild following World War I. Many men from Batavia volunteered for service during World War II but when hostilities began on September 2nd 1940 all men mustered out except for a few selected members who continued on into war’s end weeks later as part of ceremony honoring veterans at Soldier Field in Chicago (now Soldier Field Museum). Afterward many returning veterans found work opportunities available in local businesses while others returned home where they helped lead families back onto an active social life which continues today among those who have made their mark with National Guard units Serving our community proudly!

The Illinois National Guard was organized in 1917 and became a state militia organization on November 1, 1917. The unit was first called the Batavia Regiment but later changed its name to the Illinois National Guard. On October 15, 1920, it was redesignated as the Batavia Regiment of Infantry and Cavalry. In 1932, it became an artillery regiment and on July 1, 1935 it re-designated as the Illinois National Guard Artillery Regiment. It was disbanded on September 30th, 1945.
Batavia is a small town in Dixon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,795 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Batavia was named for Batavia Township in St. Clair County, Michigan. The first settlers in what is now Batavia were Dutch Reformed missionaries who arrived in 1795. They built a mission and log cabin on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1814, they founded a township which became Batavia Township on February 14, 1818. When the Illinois Territory was organized in 1837, it included all of present-day Dixon and Cook counties as well as parts of St. Clair and Wayne counties to the east and west respectively. The first settler in what is now Batavia Township was Abram Marshal who arrived there in 1840 from Putnam County, New York. He built a cabin onthe north side of the Des Plaines River where he later sold land to other pioneers including John Neely Bryan and Nicholas Copley Browning.. In 1853-54, James Pugh purchased 101 acres (40 hectares) northwest of present-day Batavia from Nicholas Copley Browning for $15 per acre ($ today). This parcel formed part of what would become Peoria Heights subdivision which developed into one of Chicago's most upscale neighborhoods after World War II when many displaced Europeans moved into this area due to rising joblessness rates following America's involvement in World War II

The first European settlement in Batavia, Illinois was founded by Andrew Johnson in 1812. Johnson and his party of settlers were seeking a new land grant from the United States government. The group arrived at the site of what is now Batavia on May 7, 1812. They began construction of their small cabin and trading post which they named "Natchez." By fall of that year, the town had grown to about 50 people. In 1814, John Prentice founded another small outpost in what is now Batavia called Prairie du Chien. This settlement served as the easternmost point for travelers traveling along the Great Lakes watershed before reaching Chicago. For a time, these two settlements acted as one single community. However, by 1818 both settlements had ceased operations due to lack of water supplies and other problems. Batavia's heyday came during the American Civil War when it was known as "The Hub" for military activity around Chicago area. The town saw an influx of soldiers and civilians alike due to its strategic location on Lake Michigan between Fort Dearborn and Rock Island Arsenal. In addition, Batavia became home to many breweries during this time period including Cook & Fryer Brewing Company (now owned by Anheuser-Busch), White Stock Brewery (now defunct), and Nantz Brewery (closed). After the war ended in 1865, the population declined rapidly because most people left for better opportunities in other parts of America or Europe. Only a few individuals remained until 1970 when it was annexed by Greenfield Township
Batavia was a small community in the Illinois central region of the United States, located in Hancock County. The community was established by pioneers in 1836, and was named for Batavia, New York, which at that time served as the capital of Northwest Territory. By 1840, Batavia had a population of around 100 people. In 1847, Batavia became part of the newly organized town of Decatur Township. In 1857, Batavia merged with the neighboring community of Greenfield to form the new town of Batavia-Greenfield. The township ceased to exist after 14 years due to its failure to achieve significant growth.
