The first Europeans to visit Batavia were French traders led by Pierre-Jacques Marquette in 1679 and again in 1681. They built a trading post near what is now Batavia on the Rock River, named after Fort Rouge on Lake Michigan they had just discovered. The post was abandoned in 1701 because of shortage of food and water, but it was later used as a military base by General James De Witt during the Northwest Indian Wars.
In 1809, President James K. Polk sent US troops under General John Addison to quash a rebellion against Ulysses S. Grant at Vandalia (now Springfield), Illinois; this event is known as the Battle of Black Hawk Creek or Big Stone Gap–Batavia Station Campaign. After this victory, General George Crook moved his headquarters from St Louis to Peoria with 2 regiments and 12 companies of Infantry "George Crook's Life in American Politics" (1910) and converted what became Batavia into an agricultural outpost for his new army.
In 1821 Colonel Nathaniel Banks recommended that Batavia be made a town authorized by Congress; it was given its present name two years later.

Batavia, Illinois is a small town located in Macomb County, Illinois. The population was 586 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Streator-Decatur, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Batavia were farmers who arrived in 1837 and began farming land that would later become Batavia Township. In 1849, the township was organized into a village and named after Dutch city of Batavia (now Jakarta). The village slowly declined in size until it disappeared completely from historical memory in the early 20th century. In 1907, the Village of Batavia was reestablished as the town of Batavia, IL by an act of the General Assembly. At its incorporation on November 1, 1907,Batavia had a population of just over 100 people. By 1970, however,batavia's population had decreased to just under 50 residents due to various factors including departure for other cities during that time period and suburban growth across Macomb County. On July 15th, 2006; Batavia Township approved plans for construction of a new high school which would replace the former High School #2 which has been vacant since 2000. The project will consist of a two-story building with classrooms above ground level and an underground garage beneath it which will serve as both gymnasium and auditorium/stage area for student performances and events. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2007 and should be completed by 2011.
