The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Collection is a project of the Batavia, Illinois Marines Historical Society. The collection consists of items donated by marines who have served in the United States Marine Corps. In addition to donations of supplies and equipment, many marines have also donated holiday presents for their comrades in arms. Throughout its history, the Marine Corps has been donation-driven. This is evident in the deployment gift history which features a wide variety of items and items from different parts of the world. Items include radios, clothing and other personal belongings as well as military equipment and supplies. One item that is particularly noteworthy is the Christmas present received by Marines Sergeant First Class Ronald A. Wirths from Germany in 1984. Sergeant Wirths had served with distinction with Company F, 3rd Battalion (2nd Marines) during Operation Desert Storm and was awarded two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars for his heroism during that conflict. When he returned to Germany after being discharged from the Marine Corps, Sergeant Wirths decided to donate his gifts to his fellow troops stationed there at home on behalf of Unit cohesion within the battalion as well as promotion opportunities for his unitmates back home in America. Another significant donation made by a marine was Captain Jack Karpyshyn’s purchase of an Auspex sight device for use by Platoon Leader Third Class John Daugherty Jr., 1st Battalion (5th Marines), during Operation Neptune’s Spear III off Okinawa Island in 1978. OtherNotable gifts include an Americanmade M203 grenade launcher which was given to 2nd Lieutenant Tom Tilton while serving with 2nd Battalion (3rd Marines)during operations My Lai Ii II off Saipan Islands in 1972; an M1 Abrams tank which was gifted to 3rd Lieutenant Keith Silliphant while serving with 4th Naval Brigade Combat Team - East Asia located at Yokosuka Naval Base; four pistols purchased by Second Lieutenant Gary Jaffe during his time spent as platoon sergeant with 1st/7th Marines; five rifles purchased by First Lieutenant Rick Majerus while serving with 5th Regiment Charlie Company aboard USS Valley Forge;} An Army National Guard patch which was given to 2nd Lt Dick Hixon when he deployed wounded soldiers from Warrior Battalion 601st Aviation Regiment support brigade medical evacuation mission into Kuwait City after Iraq Invasion on April 15, 1990.} Aussies receive USMC souvenir helmet alongwith service dress shirt just prior discharge ceremony etc... AUSCHWAGEN HOMEHOLD These are just a few examples but it would be remiss not to mention other gifts such as a UZI machine gun or even a fishing net! It really shows how much these marines care about their fellows back home!

Batavia is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to reach what is now Batavia was Dutchman Hendrick Corstiaensen in 1614 on his trip from Rotterdam to Leyden. In 1795, Lewis and Clark passed through this area on their way northward through Illinois. Hudson's Bay Company trader George Vancouver also passed through here in 1793 on his way from Montreal to visit the Great Lakes region. In 1803, General James K. Polk led an army southward along the river Styx into what is now McLean County while he was commander of Ulysses S Grant's Cavalry Division during the Mexican–American War. General Polk's troops camped at what is now Batavia for two nights before continuing their route eastward towards Peoria Junction where they rendezvoused with General Winfield Scott's army just prior to battle at Palo Alto Bridge over the Central Texas River on October 16th 1805; that engagement resulted in a decisive victory for Mexico and opened up new frontiers for American Expansionism throughout much of Southwestern America including Arizona and New Mexico Territory (which would later become California). On July 5th 1830, Batavia Township organized as a result of statehood efforts by Rufus King and others in response to anti-Catholic hysteria that had been building since early eighteenth century when Catholics were effectively banned from many areas across Great Britain due to religious restrictions put in place by James I – one of several factors which led directly to Irish Potato Famine (1845-54). The township’s first official meeting took place on September 11th 1830 under the presidency of Joseph Pappenheimer; thereafter it held annual meetings until its dissolution effective December 15th 1840 following Pappenheimer’s death suddenly after only three years as Township President due largely to his advanced age – though some minor meetings continued until January 1st 1841 due to local opposition thereto) . A number ofBatavia businesses functioned successfully during this time including: Dennison & Baird Foundry (manufacturing cannon), Phelps & Phelps Bank (provider of banking services), J H Cramer Grain Elevator (producer/seller of maize seed/flour), G W Wise Coal Yard (coal producer) and A M Schoenwald Dry Goods Store (general merchandise store). One important development which occurred during this time was the construction or renovation of two churches – First Presbyterian Church built based on designs by prominent Chicago architect John Hennepin and completed in 1836 followed by Second Presbyterian Church built in 1840 which soon became famous as “the Gothic Revival” church located just west side OF Turnpike Street opposite current day State Capitol building; both structures remain active today as well as numerous other buildings associated with Batavia village such as - Schoolhouse #1 erected around 1850 which serves grades Pre-Kindergarten thru 8th grade today as well As batavian post office building erected about 1925 still standing]; but some have argued that there are too few historic buildings remaining within modern-day village for it truly qualify as a true “village” . One significant event that occurred during this time period related directlyto Batavia Villagewas one such pivotal battle fought here involving Union forces commanded by Brigadier General Oliver Otis Howard against Confederate forces under Colonel Robert Ewell; however despite being numerically superior numerically speaking Union forces were ultimately routed at Battle Of Antietam Creek resulting in heavy casualties among both sides including Otis Howard who lost his life subsequently becoming an Ohio US Congressman representing Ohio's 3rd District from 1865 until his death in 1902 .) batavian school system began operation approximately 1860 students attend public schools operated by township trustees while private schools operate within individual families ; currently there are seven school districts operating withinBatavia village - three operated by township trustees with five elementary schools open enrollment ranging from Pre-Kindergarten thru 8th grade yearend 2016 batsavian high school opens Physical Education curriculum beginning 9 th grade providing opportunities for students 7 th graders thru 12 th grades
