Batavia is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Peoria–Bloomington–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. Batavia is located on the border of McLean and Kane Counties. The first settler in what would become Batavia was Levi Coffin who arrived in 1812 from Maryland with his family. He built a cabin near present day Main Street and Settlers Road. In 1813, John Kapp bought land near the present day site of town from Coffin for $200 dollars. Kapp named his new settlement "Batavia." The first post office opened in 1816 under the name "Wesleyan". In 1821, Judge George Nethercutt organized a township which included what is now Batavia Township and sold it to Levi Coffin for $1,500 cash. In 1830, James Harvey purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present day Batavia from Jabez Bowen for $100 dollars. Harvey renamed his tract "Harvey's Prairie" after himself and laid out a village on it called Harveyville which he later abandoned when he moved west to Hollywood Park Township in Stephenson County). Harvey's Prairie served as the nucleus around which future villages were founded such as Mundelein (1832), Arlington Heights (1835), Washington Heights (1838), Highland Park (1841), Lombard (1842), Schaumburg (1846), Fox River Grove (1849) and finally Batavia itself in 1850. The first school in what would become Batavia was established by teacher Ebenezer Barton in 1836 on land donated by Amos Kendall along with money contributed by other citizens of the community. Classes were taught until 1840 when they were moved to a building owned by Methodist Episcopal Church member William White at 5th & North Streets where they continued until 1865 when their current building was erected also on land donated by Kendall and paid for with money saved during World War II.. In 1861 Illinois statehood occurred which caused many people within Northern Illinois to leave their homes including many prominent businessmen such as Levi Coffin who relocated to Peoria IL where he became president of First National Bank In 1865 local resident James Swayne donated 4 acres (.16 km²) northwest of town square directly across State street from white church to be used as an Agricultural School Trial Ground also known as Swayne Farm until 1922 when it reverted back to its original name.. In 1922-1923 local resident Julius Rosenwald donated 3 blocks NW corner State&Washington streets between these two blocks old Ford dealership lot costed $2500 give or take
