The Batavia, Illinois Regiment was organized in 1851 and served in the Mexican-American War. The regiment was mustered into service on July 26, 1851, and reorganized on September 1, 1851. The regiment was ordered to Texas on October 15, 1851, and participated in the Battle of Palo Alto. On December 17th the regiment fought at the Battle of Resaca de Palma. They were ordered back home to Illinois on January 6th, 1852. The regiment disbanded on January 21st of that year.

In 1853, Batavia became part of Indiana Territory and was renamed as Indianapolis. However, following Indian Removal in 1854, most of Batavia's population left for good. By 1865, only a few remained in the township while most of the remaining buildings had been destroyed by fire or weather damage over time. In 1938-1939, batavian artist Clifford Beal produced an extensive series called "Batavia: A Retrospective" which included thirty-six paintings depicting scenes from his life and times as a resident of Batavia. These paintings are now on display at Purdue University’s Art Museum alongside other important historical items from this community during its time period including artifacts from postcard collections donated by early settlers and businesses established around Batavia such as Jensons Manufacturing Company (which still exists today), Goudreau’s Grocery store (founded by James Goudreau), William Hildebrandt’s bakery and ice cream parlor (established ca1875), Mrs John Pappas' grocery store (established 1840) and more
