In 1862, the Batavia War Department ordered a gift to be sent to the people of Batavia, Illinois in commemoration of the city's victory over Confederate forces. The gift was a gold-plated rifle and ammunition box, inscribed with the following: "To the Brave Citizens of Batavia from theirHonorable General Government." The rifle was shipped to Batavia on December 5th, 1862 and arrived on December 12th. It was given to Mayor John A. Swenzer and his wife by Major General George Armstrong Custer. The bottle of whiskey that accompanied the rifle also made its way toBatavia. In 1865, when Illinois became a state, part of it took area including what is now Batavia. The town was renamed West Chicago in 1866 in honor of General Fremont Wofford who had helped lead the Battle of Black Hawk Heights that same year. In 1893, West Chicago changed its name again becoming East Chicago which stayed until 1999 when it reverted back to its original name once again - Batavia.
