The City of Bartlett was founded on December 12, 1847 by General George H. Bartlett and Captain John Loring. The first settler in what is now Bartlett was Amos Banning who arrived in 1848 from Maine. He named his tract of land for General George Washington Bartlett and his son Amos Jr., who had fought with Washington during the Mexican-American War Banning donated the land to the United States government for use as a military reservation known as Fort Dearborn Park . In 1870, Colonel James Wernher erected a brick hotel on lot #2 which he donated to the town of Bartlett for use as a public services center and post office. The building still stands today next to the Municipal Building on East State Street . In 1872, Doctor Simeon Stevens opened an hospital in the old Hotel Wernher which he constructed on lot #1 within sight of current day First Baptist Church off NorthState Street . In 1892 Dr Jethro Gibbs moved into his present home at 501 N State St and began providing basic health care services to residents of what would become Bartlett until 1916 when it became part of Chicago . Dr Gibbs remained active until his death in 1951. In 1907 Mayor Nicholas Ayer organized what would become Illinois’ first municipal fire department which served all portions ofDuPage County until 1925 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts
