The first settler in Bartlett was John Barton in 1827. He and his family were followed by George Barton, Sr., who arrived in 1831. His son George Barton, Jr., established a farmstead on what is now Prairie Road near the village limits of Bartlett in 1835. In 1847, John Hartsock settled a parcel of land east of present-day Bartlett along what is now West Superior Avenue and North Racine Street. In 1850 he built a sawmill on the eastern side of current-day Prairie Road north of where today's Village Hall stands. A grist mill also operated in Bartlett from about 1860 to 1865. The village boundaries were set by the original township mapmakers when they surveyed the territory for new townships that were created during the American Civil War (1861-65). They included parts of present-day Decatur and Aurora counties as well as some portions of DuPage and Kane Counties bordering those townships. The villages were named after local leaders or geographical features within their respective townships: Elmhurst (present-day Elmira), Clinton (Algonquin), Deer Park (Deerfield), Greenwood (Galesburg), Hickory Hills (Hickory Grove Township), Kirkland Heights (Kirkland Lake Township), Lincoln Woods (Lincoln Township), Onalaska(Onalaska Borough) and Rosemount(Rosemount Borough). Heading west from downtown Chicago via Dearborn Avenue bisected by State Street formed an agricultural district which extended into sites now occupied by Joliettown, Winnetka Heights and East Stroudsburg; while east from Dearborn Avenue formed an industrial district which extended into sites now occupied by Downers Grove and Hoffman Estates
