Bartlett is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from John Bartlett, an early settler. The first permanent white settlers in Bartlett were Levi and his wife Rachel who arrived in 1828. They began to farm and build a log cabin on the site of present-day Bartlett High School. In 1830 they added another cabin to their farmstead and named it "Alma". John Bartlett Sr., also a pioneer settler, founded the post office here in 1834. In 1836 Abel Herndon settled on a tract of land east of Alma and laid out a town plan that included blocks for stores, churches, schools, and homes. By 1840 there were six businesses open in the town: three stores (Jenny's Store; Alcorn's grocery; Herndon & Company), one school (Alma Female Academy), two blacksmiths' shops (Herndon & Smith), one doctor's office (Dr. Haskell & Sons) and one potter's shop (Frazer Pottery). In 1850 James Ewing came to Illinois from New York with his family and platted what is now known as Ewingville on land he had purchased northeast of Alma nearpresent-day Hendricksonsville Road (). He organized what is now called the Illinois Central Railroad company, built major tracks through his plat area between Uniontown Junction () on Chicago Side Railroad mainline north to Alvord Avenue (), then turned east along Hendricksonsville Road () to reach his new community located at where I-90 leads today south of Moline ().
Bartlett was founded in 1827 by Isaac Bartlett, a Quaker. The town was named for Isaac's father, James Bartlett. In 1854, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill naming the town after Amos Tilton, an American Revolutionary War general.
