Bartlett is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,777 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The name "Bartlett" (derived from English settlers John Bartlett and his family) was Anglicized to "Belleville" after the Union Armament Company built a munitions works there in 1837. Belleville became an incorporated village in 1857 and a city in 1902. The first white settler in what would become Bartlett was John Davenport, who arrived about 1819 and built a cabin on the east side of town near where Interstate 65 now exists. Davenport's son Isaac founded the first store in Bartlett in 1830. A post office called Belleville was established here on November 15, 1835, by order of General James Keedy. The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location midway between Springfield and Chicago; it had two churches by 1840, five stores by 1850, fifteen homes by 1860, thirty-six businesses by 1870 and over one hundred residents by 1880. In 1892 Belleville merged with neighboring villages Springville and Whitehall to form what is now Springfield Township (McLean County). In 1915 Revs Gertrude Emerson and Irving Noyes founded Hartford Bible Church which remains operational today as one of America's largest Jehovah’s Witnesses congregations with more than 350 million members worldwide
