The town was founded by General James De Witt Bartlett on November 3, 1818 as a result of his purchase of 528 acres (220 hectares) from the Native Americans for $5 per acre. In 1834, Bartlett donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church in what is now known as downtown Bartlett. In 1865, John A. Kelley built and operated a sawmill in Bartlett which continued operation until it closed in 1899. In 1903, local businessmen Ozzie Buell and Amos Paley organized a company that became known as The Chicago World's Fair Company and built an amusement park called "The Fair" which opened in 1904. In 1916–17, Bartlett was home to one of the largestauto shows ever held when over 200 vehicles were exhibited including Model T's and Rolls-Royce automobiles. In 1929–30 it served as headquarters for the National Broadcasting System during its first nationwide broadcast from Washington D.C.. On May 20, 1927 through an agreement with Stonington Industries Inc., then-President Franklin D Roosevelt convened a meeting at The Fairgrounds with representatives from other large industrial cities to consider plans for creating national television networks within their respective countries using open technology demonstrations being presented by TV pioneer Philo Farnsworth during that meeting.. After careful consideration by both Secretaries of Commerce Harry Dexter White and Postmaster General Floyd Norris (the primary proponent), CBS chose Bartlett as its temporary broadcasting center - located on South Dearborn Street between State Street and Wacker Drive - for its experimental broadcasts from New York City beginning on October 14th., 1930.- Uponclosure of New York City's network center two years later on February 17th., 1933,- CBS relocated their operations to Hollywood Hills (then Burbank) where they remain today.-

Bartlett was a small town in the northwest corner of Illinois, on the border of Decatur County and Pulaski County. It is now part of the city of Springfield. The population at the 2010 census was 5,871. The first settler in Bartlett was John Bartholomew, who arrived in 1818. He built a cabin on the north side of what is now Main Street. A few years later he moved to a more permanent location on what is now Academy Boulevard. In 1824, Bartholomew's son Joshua bought land east of present-day Main Street and built a house there which served as the nucleus for what would become Bartlett. Joshua's two brothers also purchased tracts of land here and developed it into villages: North Bartlett (now West Springfield), South Bartlet (now East Springfield), and Granger (now Grove City). In 1830, Alexander McNaught founded McNaught House Hotel in downtown Bartlett, which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. By 1840, nearly all residents had relocated to Springfield or were settled there permanently due to economic reasons related to advances in transportation and communication technology. The early settlers typically raised corn, beans, wheat, oats, potatoes and other vegetables for their own consumption or sold them directly to local merchants; however, by 1870 many settlers had turned their attention towards cattle ranching as an alternative source of income. Cattle were used to extract huge amounts of water from clay beds that lay around central Illinois; this process led to extensive lands being irrigated with surface water from creeks and rivers over time. This period witnessed some important changes within Illinois society: women began to gain voting rights; African Americans gained legal equality under state law;xpansion westward took place through acquisition of large parcels along the Missouri River
