The Coast Guard has been providing service to the community in Barrington, Illinois since 1885. The first Coast Guard Station was established in this town on Feb. 3, 1885. In 1917, the Coast Guard detachment of the 20th Infantry Regiment was stationed in Barrington. On Dec. 8, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and America joined World War II as a belligerent nation. The Coast Guard detachment serving in Barrington continued to provide coast guard services until 1945 when operations were transferred to Chicago area stations. The present day structure of the Coast Guard in Barrington was created with the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002 (NDAA). Title 25 USC Chapter 653 establishes a General Service Administration Board which shall be chaired by Rear Admiral Harry J. Dyer IV who will be responsible for recommending changes to the Coast Guard organization including base closures and conversions within State and local governments; establishment of Auxiliary Units; and review of all funding requests received from Federal agencies subject to NDAA control or regulation (e.g., military bases). In response to these changes, Rear Admiral Dyer announced that Headquarters would move from its current location at Grayland Naval Air Station located adjacent to commuter railroads into a new facility scheduled for completion in late 2006 at Brownstown Airport just east of downtown Barrington along I-55 which will serve as Headquarters and Command Center for both ashore commands--the First District Commander and Second District Commander as well as major staff functions such as commandant services and information technology support activities related thereto; an Operating Unit will also be established at Brownstown Airport which will include administrative personnel engaged primarily in environmental monitoring activities; construction is now under way on a $135 million dollar project designed to relocate all five existing coastal patrol stations from their various locations around town into one centralized facility consisting of upgraded facilities capable of housing up to 24 search-and-rescue helicopters; this project is expected to begin operational status by fall 2007

The village of Barrington was organized in 1892 and named for Johnathan Barrington, an early settler and United States Senator from Massachusetts who served from 1881 to 1893. The first post office in Barrington was established in 1895. According to the 2010 census, there are three elementary schools in Barrington—Fenway-Kane Community School District No. 1; Park Ridge Elementary School; and Willingboro Union High School—and one high school—Willingboro Union Senior High School. There are also two churches in Barrington: First Baptist Church and Second Presbyterian Church.

In November 2018, the Coast Guard Museum announced that it would be selling a collection of donated items from across its history, including gift items dating back to 1872. This donation will help to preserve and grow the museum’s collection of historical artifacts related to the Coast Guard. Gift baskets filled with fresh fruits, vegetables or local seafood were common among members of the Coast Guard populace during Prohibition era because it was understood that such donations would not fall into criminal hands (although some smuggling attempts did happen). Barrington, Illinois is a small town located in north central Illinois. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from an early settler, named Benjamin Barrington, who came to the area in the mid 1800s. The village was founded in 1868 by James Gresham and others and it became a city in 1925. In 1970, it merged with other villages to form the new city of Decatur. The history of Barrington can be traced back to 1818 when Benjamin Barrington arrived in what is now Barrington Township (now Decatur) on theMississippi River. At that time, there were only three families living here: his own, those of John Cushing and Ebenezer Cobb; and those of Levi Whitman and David Wilcoxen. One year later, on November 20th, 1819, he married Susannah McGeevey at Winthrop Seminary chapel. They would have six children: Nancy (born December 25th, 1820), Samuel (March 2nd, 1823), George Washington (December 3rd or 4thgeneration; born October 9th or 10thofNovember 1799), Lydia Ann (July 12th1825), Sylvester Augustus (September 11thspring1797/98), and Solomon Anthony (January 8eenth or nineteenthofFebruary 1799). In 1830-31 Benjamin served as clerk for Circuit Court Judge Elijah Selvin; he also represented this court during sessions held at Hancock Hall on State Street in downtownDecatur between May 15-August 22nd 1830 In 1840-41 Benjamin opened his own store near where present day US Highway 41 meets US Highway 6 south of town He died on January 4teenth of that year aged 73 years He had been married to Susannah McGeevey for 53 years On September 5th 1840 four local boys - Nathan Goodrich(age 11 months old then), John Lynch(age 13 years old then), Peter Hickey(age 16 years oldsuch as age 7months old)and Amasa Jones(age 9years old) went out into White County looking for land after their father's death Their leader was Amasa Jones who said "We will find a place just like home" land was found about two miles west of present day town limits On October 30 th they returned with news that five thousand acres had been landed including what is now known as Park Row which would become their first home
