The American navy has a long and proud history in Aurora, Illinois. The Navy Shipbuilding Corporation was founded here in 1916 by Admiral George Washington D.C. and Rear Admiral Alfred M. Thayer, Jr. The first ship to be built at the shipyards was the USS Kansas on November 10, 1916. The organization grew rapidly and in 1924 they established their own yards called the Western Naval Shipyard which produced submarines, destroyers, patrol boats and other naval vessels. In 1951 they merged with the United States Naval Shipbuilding Corporation to form one large company that continues to produce warships today! The USS Missouri was launched on October 12, 1943 at Western Naval Shipyard in Aurora. She served as flagship of Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet during World War II and was an important part of the Navy’s strategic offensive capabilities throughout that conflict. After her return from war she underwent repairs at Mare Island Naval Base before serving as Flagship of Commander-in-Chief Atlantic Fleet during Operation Neptune’s Spear (the Battle of Leyte Gulf). She later took part in Operation Coronet (the Battle of Saipan) before being decommissioned on May 15, 1946 and become an auxiliaries ship for the US Coast Guard until she was scrapped in 1972! In addition to her namesake vessel there are numerous other navy ships that have been memorialized or honored here in Aurora over the years: USS Arizona (1948), USS Edmund Fitzgerald (1951), USS Cleveland (1954), USS Halsey (1945), HMS Warspite (1978), HMS Duncan(1988) and more! It is safe to say that no place has seen such a rich naval history as Aurora did between 1916 & 1988!
