On Dec. 7, 1892, the Aurora Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at a meeting in the home of Mrs. J.C. Gumm in Aurora. The regiment was named for Aurora’s military history and heroism during the Black Hawk War of 1851-1852. In 1893, the regiment became part of the First Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Brigade and fought as part of that brigade in various wars including the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Civil War (1861-65), and World War I (1914-1918). In 1922, when Illinois became a state, the 1st ILVRC became part of the State Guard Bureau and remained so until 1959 when it was redesignated as The 1st Illiniwek Infantry Regiment. The regiment has also served in both Korean Wars and Desert Storm/Operation Iraqi Freedom

Aurora, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,594 at the 2010 census. Aurora replaced the original town of Aurora on May 15, 1837. It was named for the shooting star that night by James K. Polk while he was touring the area with his wife Calista Gaudet Polk. The first post office in Aurora opened on July 1, 1838. On November 2, 1839, a fire destroyed much of downtown Aurora and forced the evacuation of many people; this event is also known as "The Great Aurora Fire". Aurora's early growth spurt can be seen from its incorporation as a village on October 3rd of that year. That same year saw two new stores open up in downtown: Cooks store and Hahn’s general store. In 1840-1841 there were three businesses open: Waddell & Clark grocery store, J&R Landscaping Store and Drury House Hotel. By 1850 census there were 11 businesses active in downtown Aurora with an average population size of 282 inhabitants each; this number increased to 25 businesses by 1860 when it became part of Chicago Township limits
Aurora was founded in 1837 by John L. Aurora. In 1868, the city became the capital of Illinois and was renamed to Chicago after Chicago's incorporation as a city in 1847. The population of Aurora grew from about 10,000 in 1830 to more than 50,000 by 1860. The first public library opened in Aurora in 1848 and the first high school (now La Salle University) opened in 1861. In 1865, the city became part of the Union army during the American Civil War and many white men emigrated to Buffalo, New York due to political reasons. The City of Aurora lost nearly all its commercial activity at this time due to long transportation times and competition from Buffalo. In 1888, one of the most important events in Aurora's history took place when Republican incumbent James Aughton was defeated by Democrat Grover Cleveland for President on an issue with no clear answer; however, Cleveland praised Aughton for his "courageous stand" against central banking reform which he would later pursue as president himself. This event is also documented as being one of the few occasions on which Republicans were able to win office through running unopposed. The late 19th century saw a period of rapid growth for Aurora; new businesses were established and factory jobs replaced agricultural work that had been done until then. However, Growth stopped around 1900 when technology advanced and many new factories closed down because they could not compete with newer technologies abroad or at home owing to tariffs that had been put into place since America entered World War I (1914). Many people who had worked in these factories left town because they could not find other similar-sized cities where they could retire comfortably without fear of government subsidy/taxation (see: The Great Migration). However, despite this progressivism-era slowdown, there are still some reminders that early 20th century Aurora held much promise including a number of architecture landmarks such as The First National Bank Building which served as headquarters for successive mayors between 1910-1920 and housed both municipal offices (police station & court house) until it burned down in 1951; Roy Wessels Park named after him because he donated land for it; Renaissance Tower standing until September 2006 atop what used to be Commerce Park mall site; two large scale projects - One being a $50 million project called 'Aurora Hills' designed by starchitect Minoru Yamasaki who envisioned a mixed use development with residences, office space & retail on top while another project - 'CityPlace' - an upscale shopping center located adjacent Interstate 90 skirts downtown exposing riverfront parkland originally built for industrial purposes now used for parks contamination free green roofs etc.; both projects failed although CityPlace did become an anchor tenant within Downtown area becoming known variously as 'Aurora Place', ' traffic stop plaza ', etc.; finally Riverwalk extending along river northward from Loop Road eastward bisecting downtown making it possible suburbs annexing parts or all suburban areas over time
