Aurora, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 8,438 at the 2010 census. It is located in the west-central part of the state and straddles the border of Kane and DuPage counties. Aurora's ZIP code is 60517. The village of Aurora was platted on October 15, 1837 by John Denton and James Butler as a sawmill village on the east side of what would become Aurora Township. On November 3, 1838, it became an incorporated Village under the name "Aurora." On January 1, 1950 it merged with neighboring townships to form Lake View Township which still exists as a separate municipality today. The first post office in Aurora opened on December 12th, 1839. The current post office has been open since February 25th, 1907. On November 5th 1912 voters passed a resolution to annex part of Chicago into their community so that they could have one more shopping center within their borders - this annexation didn't happen because Chicago decided not to annex any villages after failed attempts during World War I & II due to lack of support from Aurora residents (the City Limits ordinance prohibited cities from annexing villages). In 1925 Mayor Harry Slinger vetoed legislation allowing for speed limits on arterial roads within city limits; this veto cost him his job but helped spur private investment that led to new homes being built near Community Park and other civic improvements including better streetscaping and irrigation systems throughout the township over time culminating in an increase in population from 707 when Lake View Township formed until 2008 when its population reached its peak at 10,254 people
