The Army was founded in 1815, and the first unit to be raised in Aurora was the 5th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. The regiment served in the War of 1812 and later fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1846, the 1st Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry was organized, and it served in the Civil War as a Union unit. The 1st Regiment was disbanded after the war. In 1861, when Illinois seceded from the United States, President Abraham Lincoln called for an army to be raised to protect the state. The 1st Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry was reorganized into a battalion and ordered to serve in northeastern Missouri until it arrived at Cairo, Illinois on November 10th. On December 16th, 1861, this battalion traveled south to Morristown, Tennessee and then west through Alabama before arriving at Springfield on January 2nd 1863. On February 26th 1863, these volunteers were mustered into service as part of General Robert E. Lee’s army under command of Major General Ulysses S Grant. On April 12th 1863 they deployed against Confederate forces near Corinth Mississippi; however due to bad weather they were forced withdraw after only three days fighting. They returned home on July 8th following another six-week deployment including some action at Fort Donelson Mississippi where they successfully repulsed an attack by Confederate forces on July 9th 1865. After their service with General Robert E Lee's army ended in 1865, many members of this battalion settled down and became farmers or mechanics while others joined companies within other regiments or continued their volunteer careers altogether throughout Reconstruction period (1868-1877). For many veterans who had served during American Civil War there would be no rest until their return home where they began rebuilding their lives back at home - starting withforming local militias for self-defense or forming new businesses such as grocery stores or tailorsmiths once again becoming a majorstay during early post-war America which saw rapid growth periods especially following World War I which led directly into World War II .

Aurora, Illinois was a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. It was founded by John and Sarah Laughlin in 1836 as a log cabin community on the banks of the Sangamon River. In 1851, Aurora became the county seat of Cook County and it remained so until 1958 when Joliet took over that role. The population of Aurora grew slowly throughout its early years, averaging only 1,000 people per year; however, during the late 19th century much growth occurred due to immigration from Northern Europe. By 1920 there were over 20,000 residents in Aurora. After World War II Aurorans experienced significant economic growth thanks to increased manufacturing and agriculture sectors. However, during the late 21st century efforts have been made to reduce population density and improve infrastructure with a focus on education and entertainment opportunities. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Aurora were French traders working for fur trader Pierre Laclède in 1795-96 who named their new settlement "Aurora". French explorers Jean Baptiste Chartier and Nicolas Bourdon also visited this site between 1800-1801 while exploringthe Sangamon River region for fur companies such as LaFontaine & Company and La Salle & Company. The name may have come from an Iroquois word meaning 'place where many deer are found'. This location would be later known as Aurora because of its proximity to other settlements around Chicago including Holland Park (now part of Oak Lawn) which originally consisted only of several scattered cabins surrounded by an open meadow used for public hunting sessions each summer...Holland Park gradually acquired more buildings until by 1837 it had become one large village with about fifty houses built mostly by subscription or donation from citizens...In response to popular demand for more schools, churches, businesses and residences within close vicinity some wealthy citizens donated parcels of land east of Holland Park now called West Side Highway for development into what is today Aurora Township...Between 1830-1839 three separate school districts operated out of different locations: Northwest School District at Hoffman Estates north side; South Side School District at Sheffield west side; South Bloomington School District at East Bloomington south side...All three school districts shared common buildings but operated separately because they did not share staff or facilities." When Cook County was organized in 1851 it included Northwestern Territory along with parts of Kane Countywest thereof including present day Aurora Township
