National Guard gifts have been a part of the Arlington Heights community for over sixty years. The gift of a military unit to a municipality is an important gesture and often signifies an allegiance to the town or city. In some cases, the units may be relics from World War I or World War II that have been donated to the town or city by their members. Other times, National Guard units may be reactivated by local governments as needed in response to natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, or tornado outbreaks. One of the first gifts given to Arlington Heights was a regiment from Michigan that served in World War I. Upon its disbanding in 1918, many members took their unit's rifles and pistols with them when they left for new assignments. These guns were stored at the old Armory on Pulaski Road until 1921 when they were donated to Arlington Heights by then-Mayor Harry Wirths. At this time, it was clear that war-time surplus materiel would not last long in Illinois so Mayor Wirths offered $10 per rifle and pistol to anyone who could bring them back into service within two years - including officers and enlisted men! This generosity continues through today as donations continue to be made both through Mayor Wirths' office and online donation channels like GiveWell.org. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered all U.S.-registered cities and towns across America into martial law due to concerns about Japanese aggression in Asia. As a result, many civilian organizations decided it was time for their own civic guard force - usually composed of volunteers from their respective communities (or even residents) turned soldiers! The Chicago American Legion contributed eight companies of artillery troops which became known as "The cannon fodder" because they fought primarily against Japanese forces rather than any other enemy combatants! However, despite this side effect - called "The gift" by some - The American Legion wasn't disbanded until 1945 due largely to public pressure from residents throughout Illinois! Today's national guard units are typically activated by local governments whenever there is an emergency such as natural disasters or threats posed by terrorists or criminals alike (though sometimes state militias can also be activated). In fact, one recent example is how the Chicago Park District has activation authority for three county sheriff's departments should any major issues arise near Soldier Field during Blackhawks games! Today, there are more than 26 million active duty membersofthe National Guard across all 50 states plus Washington D.C., as well as 100 international missions.[1] There are also special operations forces (SOF) made up of guardsmen who engage in clandestine activities or paramilitary tasks outside normal army duties. It should come as no surprise then that nationally guarded gifts have been around for centuries – some even dates back before George Washington founded our country! In 1871, the first white settlement in Arlington Heights was made when James Sprague and his family moved from Scranton, Pennsylvania to a farm on the east side of town. The Sprague household soon outgrew the small farm and in 1872, bought land on the west side of town. In 1875, they built a home that still stands today - known as The White House. They were among the first people to live in Arbor Hill. The early years of Arlington Heights were difficult for its residents as there was little money available to buy goods or services necessary for life. This changed when Illinois became a state in 1877. With more money available, businesses starting up and Arlington Heights becoming one of the most popular places to live in Illinois. One of the earliest businesses to open up in Arlington Heights was The Gilded Cage which became an integral part of local culture and economy until it closed its doors in 1933. Another early business that thrived was Mrs Templeton's grocery which is now known as The Templeton Shopping Center. Many famous people have lived or worked here including: Franklin D Roosevelt (President), Abraham Lincoln (President), Harry Truman (President), Eleanor Roosevelt (First Lady), Jay Leno ( Comedian ), Allen Ives ( Composer ), and many more!
