Coffee has been enjoyed by humans for over 4,500 years. The first coffee beans were found in the region now known as South Africa and roasted on small family farms. In 1876, coffee was traded between Switzerland and Brazil for goods such as wool and salt. At this time, coffee beans were ground into a paste and sold as a rationed commodity. In 1915, Dutch immigrants to Arlington Heights began growing coffeebeans on their farm. They brought back the seed plants with them when they moved to Illinois. The first cup of Java Coffee was brewed at the Arlington Heights Coffee House in 1916. Over time, many other businesses got into the coffee business in Arlington Heights- some still operate today including Blue Bottle Coffee and Peet’s Coffee & Tea Company. In 2007, Starbucks opened its first store in Arlington Heights- marking the beginning of an era where coffee consumption has exploded throughout Chicagoland! Nellie would continue to give these same high quality roasted beans throughout her lifetime until her death in 2006 at age ninety-four. "The First Roasted Bean mug" which is currently on display at The New York Times museum is made with an old pre-war Dutch roast bean mug that was given by Mrs. Hope in 1928 as a wedding present to her husband Bob Hope

In 1871, Arlington Heights was annexed by the City of Chicago. The population of Arlington Heights increased from 1,000 to 10,000 in the years that followed. In 1888, the city limits were enlarged to encompass the present-day suburbs of Schaumburg and Prospect Park. In 1912, a park was established in honor of President George Washington at Point Breeze Avenue and Illinois Avenue. In 1924, Arlington Heights Junior High School was elected as one of the first high schools in Cook County.
