Arlington Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Arlington Heights was incorporated on April 20, 1892. It is one of the most ethnically diverse villages in Illinois and has a wide variety of cultures represented. The Village Board has jurisdiction over all issues within its borders including zoning, planning, finances and education. The first white settler in Arlington Heights was Abram Bassett who arrived in 1841. Bassett married Sarah Decker in 1847 and they had four children: Abram (1849-1929), John (1851-1934), Sarah Jane (1853-1973) and Edwin (1855-1925). By 1870 there were also black residents living in Arlington Heights as well as Irish Americans and German Americans. In 1895 white farmers from Allegany County began to arrive in what is now Arlington Heights to purchase land around Green Lake that had been donated by the government for public use. When the railroad came through Arlington Heights they started to build their homes on these new lots which totaled 10 acres (4 hectares). In 1898 Aaron Burr Way was opened up as a main street through the village after an effort by Mayor James Whelan to improve trade between town and village Square. This street still exists today as one of two main arteries through town linking North Avenue with South Avenue/Lake Street east of Central Park/Wicker Park junction
The Coast Guard has been providing assistance to the people of the maritime community for more than 120 years. The service is unique in that it provides law enforcement and security on coastal areas that are vital to the economy, including ports and other transportation hubs. The Coast Guard also conducts search and rescue operations, responds to emergencies, provide humanitarian relief, educates the public about maritime safety, and defends our nation’s coastlines from trespassers and pirates. By 1915 Coastal Command had increased staffing levels by 25% due in large part to World War I shortages of manpower along America’s coasts! With new technologies (such as radar) and advances in naval engineering (eighth century shipbuilding techniques were completely replaced), Station personnel continued their important role during World War II but increasingly took on roles beyond simply protection against maritime threats! The post-war era saw numerous expansions – both at Point Lookout (in 1946) when Command moved ashore aboard Navy vessels while still maintaining shore facilities ashore) but also Sea Base Charleston Naval Air Station which opened adjacent to downtown Charleston Harbor in 1957 (!), followed by Brunswick Naval Air Station which opened adjacent Brunswick County NJ beach front in 1963 (!). With developments such as Shore Patrol Helicopter Operations during Hurricane Sandy/New Jersey Earthquake early this decade combined with increasing calls for Terrorism Prevention help within our nation’s borders both domestically AND abroad we now find ourselves once again reaching back into our past for gifts that will keep your loved ones safe ON THE COASTAL ISLANDESIDE!!
