The Illinois Air National Guard's 1st Bombardment Wing was activated there in 1912, and served as a nucleus for the aerial arm of the American military during World War I. In 1919, the wing became a training squadron; in 1930 it became an air force unit. The wing flew combat missions from RAF Foul frigate HMS Eagle during World War II, flying bombers such as the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator. General Eisenhower entered politics as a Democrat before becoming an Army general at age 24 after being appointed commander of Allied troops near Paris during World War I. He led Allied forces throughout World War II while also holding various other posts including Chief of Staff of NATO (1949–51), Supreme Commander Europe (1948–50), Mayor of Gettysburg (1945), Director for Plans under President Harry S Truman (1950–54) and Deputy Director for Intelligence at Central Intelligence Agency Headquarters (1965–68). Ike was elected president twice but lost both campaigns due to Francesco Cossiga's landslide victory over him in 1958]. Arlington Heights is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 85,606 at the 2010 census. Arlington Heights is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south, Oak Lawn to the west, and Schaumburg to the north. The community was first settled in 1871 as a result of a land grant from George Washington Carver. The present-day city was organized on February 14, 1892 when Arlington Township (now Arlington Heights) and Evanston Township were merged into the newly formed city of Chicago. The name "Arlington" originated with an assignment given to residents of Englewood Township for their part in helping build what would become Dearborn Park near Northwestern University in 1887. In 1893, construction began on what would become one of Chicagos most famous landmarks: The Sherman House which stands today on Wabash Avenue between State and Randolph Streets. Designed by architect John Hesseltine and built by local contractor Arthur Stickney under terms agreed upon between both parties, it served as both home and office for many notable personalities including Abraham Lincoln and Jay Gould during their time as Mayor (1893-1895) and Secretary of Treasury (1896-1901). AIR FORCE DISPATCHED GIFT HISTORY: 1947 – 1966 In 1947, Congress authorizes the creation of the USAF as an air arm by authorizing appropriations for that purpose. This was followed by President Harry Truman's Executive Order 9010 on January 3rd 1948 which establishes guidelines for airborne gifting within Departmental agencies (the Office of Civilian Defense). With this order came new regulations governing how gifts should be delivered and distributed among service members and their families; these included specific instructions regarding what type of content should be included in gift packages (chocolate bars being excluded from distribution). During World War II there had been a trend towards sending small personal samples as thank you gifts rather than large bouquets or baskets so it was not until after hostilities had ended that Gifts began becoming commonplace amongst Federal employees and their families outside Of Government institutions (e.g., spouses working at home). The land that makes up Arlington Heights was first settled by German-Americans and Irish-Americans in 1871. In 1916, Arlington Heights became the first municipality in Cook County to be organized as a single ward. It remains one of the most diverse and ethnically rich cities in America. The history of Arlington Heights began with its incorporation as a town on October 15, 1871. At that time the population consisted of only German-Amerindians and Irish-Amerindians. The town was named for General James A. Garfield who had been assassinated two years earlier in Washington D.C., setting off a national political crisis which led to the creation of the United States Congress as part of Pennsylvania’s new state government following President Abraham Lincoln’s re-election victory over Andrew Johnson. Garfield had become vice president after being elected Ulysses S. Grant’s running mate during his successful bid for reelection as Ulysses S. Grant’s second term as president in 1868–1869; he would succeed Grover Cleveland when he succeeded James Kapp “Kapp" Price as mayor of New York City upon Price's death on July 8th, 1889 – making him America's first African American mayor (he would also serve two terms as Cook County State Senator). As suchGarland represented Illinois citizens within the newly created Congress which met for the first time on January 3rd, 1789 at Philadelphia under then Speaker John Adams (the same man who unsuccessfully opposed George Washington's inauguration into office less than three months earlier). In 1916 Arlington Heights became one of the first municipalities in Cook County to be organized as a single ward; this move followed similar initiatives by other municipalities including Lombard (1915), Hinsdale (1916), Bartlett (1920), Elmhurst (1925) and Winnetka (1926). This advances municipal democracy which has since been adopted throughout much of North America including Chicago suburb Park Ridge where Mayor Richard Mapplethorpe proclaimed " mayoral rule" effective December 12th, 1976 following his election victory over incumbent Ed Rendell despite Rendell having been indicted on corruption charges just prior to that date; Mapplethorpe would later be removed from office amidst increasing public pressure due to his involvement with Enron Corporation although he remain popular among many Chicagoans nonetheless.) Arlington Heights is home to several large businesses including Sears Canada Holding Corporation whose headquarters are located on Ottawa Street between Michigan Avenue and Lexington Avenue; KFC Worldwide Inc.; Ford Motor Company ; Allstate Insurance Company ; United Technologies Corporporated ; American International Group Incorporated ; Goldman Sachs & Co.; JBL Audio Laboratories LLP.; Microsoft Corporation ; IBM WorldCom - InfoPath Europe Limited Partnership ); Akamai Technologies Incorporated (); Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (); Motorola Solutions Incorporated (); First Data Corporation (); Wachovia Bankshares LLC ().
