They were looking for a new place to live and found their way to what is now Antioch, Illinois. The first white people in this area were the Pecos Indians. They built the first log cabin in what is now Antioch in 1827. The first formal settler meeting was held in Antioch in 1830. The town was platted according to the rules of sectionalism at that time. It became one of the original towns in Cook County, Illinois on November 1, 1833. The town rapidly grew and by 1860 there were over 2,500 residents living there. In 1865, Antioch Mill was built and it still stands today as one of the most important businesses in town. After becoming an incorporated village on December 12, 1893, it had high-growth rates until World War I when numbers declined sharply due to warfare and other causes. "Antioch," located near Springfield (now Urbana), was named for General Anthony Wayne's uncle who fought at Fallen Timbers Creek against Shawnee Indian forces about 17 miles east of present-day Antioch on October 8th 1812 during what is known as "The Great Battle." General Wayne's unit included 300 men under his command which resulted from 100% casualties among both sides with only 20 horses lost out of 2400 total engaged; including Gen'l Wayne himself who was slightly wounded but not killed." Antioch, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1852 by John and Anna Stephenson as Antioch Township. The community was named for the Greek city of Antioch in Syria. The Stephenson family donated land to the town and built a school and post office in 1853. In 1859, the township was renamed Antioch Borough after Antioch Township's first mayor, Ebenezer Wigglesworth. In 1872, the borough became an independent town when it absorbed neighboring village of North Antioch. The population of Antioch reached 614 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to live in what is now Antioch were two families from Maryland who arrived on horseback early in 1851. They called their new settlement "Antioch," after the Greek city of Antioch near Damascus where they had been living before moving eastward to Indiana Territory during the Mexican-American War (1846–48). John Stephenson landed his wagon train at Kankakee Prairie on November 12, 1851 and began setting up a homestead as early as December 1st while he awaited word from home that his father's death had not resulted in any definite orders from Washington Territory Headquarters about whether or not to accept immigrants into the Union as citizens or become refugees again like many other pioneers before him. From January through March 1850 he had been working with brethren Jacob Dillard and William Halsey on a farm four miles east of present-day Molineux just south of Randolph Road which led down into Kankakee Creek valley; it may have been one mile east of today's line between Molineux and Belleville Streets on Randolph Road between Belleville Avenue (now Edwards Boulevard) and East Douglas Boulevard across East Douglas Boulevard from Northwest University Drive today’s site where Parkview Residence now stands located within today’s limits of Belleville Township northwest corner parcel extending northeasterly along edge then easterly along First Street then westerly along South Douglas Boulevard thence due southwesterly along Home Avenue extension thence easterly along Home Avenue Extension to its mouth at Kankakee Creek Valley where they harvested wild rice seed fields starting December 1st 1840 John Stephenson also raised pigs there & hogs but found them too expensive so left those animals behind & started raising beefalo here later adding cows some time later Mailing order arrived for 10 oxen this amount being more than enough all told so Mr Stephenson took care Of those beasts himself driving them back overland using teamsters teams pulled by donkeys until they got to Chicago Dec 12th Arriving there Jan 5th 1850 A large crowd went out To meet them At Dearborn Street

In 1937, Antioch was renamed after Dr. John Fenton Butler who served as president of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1904 to 1906.
