Antioch, Illinois is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Antioch is the county seat of Sangamon County. Antioch was platted on August 10, 1831 by George Catlin and James Catlin as part of a land grant to John Catlin. The name "Antioch" is from Greek Αντιώτομαι (atomo), meaning "to inhabit." The first Methodist Episcopal Church was built in Antioch in 1846 and served the community until 1951. Antioch's post office closed on July 15, 1893; its last letter was sent on July 16th. The current post office building was completed in 1954 and serves as the town hall for Antioch. The town has several businesses that provide services to the local community including: Bank of America, Pizza Hut, Walmart Supercenter, KFC/Chick-fil-A/Burger King Extraordinary Meal Planner Program Trustee Services Department Store and more. Antioch also offers several cultural attractions such as the Antioch Art Museum which features art from throughout history including European paintings from the 16th century to contemporary American art;the Antioch Shakespeare Festival which features plays performed each year by professional actors from around Illinois;and7 Hills Recreation Area which includes a number of hiking trails and nature reserves perfect for exploring during spring or fall months.

Antioch is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2000 census. Antioch was founded in 1847 by John and Anna (née Armstrong) Butler. The township was organized on November 4, 1851. In 1872, Antioch and the rest of McHenry County were ceded to the state of Illinois as part of the Deep South Compact. The county seat moved to Rockford in 1966. The area that makes up Antioch today was first settled by Native Americans: the Potawatomi lived here for centuries before moving westward into what is now Michigan Territory in the early 1800s. At some point after they arrived here, they began using fire ants as an early form of currency because their trade goods could only be traded with those who had 5 or 10 pieces of fire ants each. In 1847, John Butler built a log cabin near present-day Antioch on a tract of land he had bought from Nicholas Stillwater. He soon started trading goods with settlers living near Chicago and other Great Lakes towns for Indian artifacts and slaves brought overland from Texas and Louisiana. In 1850, he married Anna Armstrong and started families in Antioch with his first wife and four children – all still living there when he died in 1865 at age 72 years old: Sarah Jane (born December 12th1850), John Brown (born March 3rd1852), Laura Elizabeth (born October 19th1854),and Henry Addison(born November 13th1857). Anna's brother George Stephenson also lived in Antioch during this time; he became one of earliest Socialists in America based out of Chicago while attending college there under Ferdinand Bauer. When Anna died suddenly on February 1st 1861 at age 54 years old due to complications from childbirth her two sons followed her into death within days – one less mouth to feed which impacted food prices throughout much of post-Civil War America putatively due to increased demand following Civil War victory/loss! After their mother's death both sons took up farming where they live to this day: George Stephenson lives on a farm east of Romeoville; John Brown lives just outside Romeoville on a tract belonging to his father’s older sister Mrs.(F)John Alder Robinson
In 1821, the first Baptist church in Antioch was built on a lot that was once part of the home of Mrs. Smith. The first sermon preached by Rev. John Denton was held on November 1, 1821. Reverend Denton had come to Antioch from nearby Carbondale, Illinois after serving as pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Carbondale. In 1824, Mr. and Mrs. Smith donated land for a Methodist Episcopal church which soon became known as First Methodist Church in Antioch. Reverend Jeptha Bowen officiated at the first service there on October 15, 1825. In 1830, the town's first school was opened under the guidance of Drs. James and Sarah Goodeberry with twelve students enrolled in grades one through four. By 1840, there were twenty-one students attending school and five teachers providing instruction! In 1850-1851, Revs James Farragut (Dentist) and David Rankin (Theologian) served as pastors of First Methodist Chapel in Antioch during some exciting times for the community including construction of a new courthouse and jail addition which is still standing today! In 1861 when America went into Civil War™ (what else would you call it?), Antioch sided with her country against her husband’s Union side™️ However, many people within town did not follow their mayor or even support their government because they felt that she couldn’t be trusted 😢️ As a result most people turned out to vote for Abraham Lincoln when he came to office later that year™️ After years of reconstruction following the war** our community slowly started to rebound back up again*** With various businesses starting up like restaurants etc., we continue growing stronger every day! Today we have an estimated population of over 100### along with several churches/meetinghouses/schools throughout our townspanning all denominations*** And we are continuing to grow more diverse each day!
