Java was also an important stop on Portuguese voyages; here they traded spices such as pepper, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg while also finding slaves to work on plantations. The Dutch started trading with Brazil in 1624 and soon discovered that Coffee was not just a valuable commodity but also had potential medical uses. They began importing large amounts of Coffee from South America which gave them a big advantage over their Spanish rivals who only had access to lesser quality beans. By 1740 there were more than 2,000 cafés dotted around Amsterdam – evidence that Coffee was now considered an essential part of Dutch society. Coffee reached its peak during the 18th century when it became popular all over Europe because of its distinctive flavor profile (particularly due to the addition of caffeine). However, by 1830 Coffeeshops were being closed down by authorities at every level because they were seen as competing against beer brewerieschafts (cafés owned by government-owned companies). This decline in popularity can be traced back to two factors: Firstly, Coffee became cheaper through technology thanks to advances in blending methods; secondly, people began preferring other drinks such as tea and wine instead of getting addicted to Alcoholic Beverages like Coffeeshops were once popular for
