Alton is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Chicago and about 25 miles (40 km) north of Springfield. According to the United States Census Bureau, Alton has a total area of 1 square mile (0.4 km²), all of it land. The town was founded in 1847 by General James K. Polk and his men as a stop on their way from Nauvoo to Cairo, Illinois. The name Alton comes from an Indian word meaning "happy place." In 1871, AlTON became one of 14 towns in Cook County that were organized as the Village of Westmont when they were merged with Rockford and Normal Township. On January 1, 1922, Alton was annexed by Rockford and became part of the larger city. However, since Rockford is not adjacent to any counties within Cook County except Kendall County, annexation applications have been made for both villages but have been denied because they are considered separate municipalities under state law; however annexation petitions are being prepared for both villages should this change.[1] As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 7,752 people living in village block 1A who identified themselves as being working-class or poor class citizens: 58% black or African American; 12% white European American; 2% Native American; 5% Asian American; 3% Pacific Islander; 2% from other races; and 9% three or more races/ethnicities makeup. These percentages vary depending on which socioeconomic measure you use: according to data collected by Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School Of Social Work®, 36%, 59%, 50%, 55%, 56%, 71%, 73%. Using poverty rates published by UJA-Federation America®([3]), these percentages drop slightly to 33%. However even if we only consider those classified as “working-class”—i.e., those making less than $30 per hour—these percentages still hover around 50%. According to recent Congressional Budget Office reports,[4] between 2007 and 2011 median household incomes increased meagerly across all income groups while real estate values continued anemic despite overbuilding throughout most metro areas nationwide [5]. Overall these trends call into question whether there exists today anywhere near enough jobs available for low-income residents meaningful work opportunities outside their home communities rather than becoming ever More impoverished inside them—a trend little noticed but increasingly significant given current economic conditions.–From article "Alton's challenges" retrieved from www .alttimesonline .com on November 8th 2017 In spite having no college degree or professional experience whatsoever upon his arrival at age 24 years old Alton's first job out went very well he worked full time at local paper mill until 1946 when he got called back into service during World War II due to overproduction caused by warring factions among businesses not knowing how much more they could afford without losing market share so I think that maybe something happened during my time off like I said maybe something changed with technology maybe new things came along then again who knows what happened post WWII but alton had some great memories from his past so he decided right after Pearl Harbor attacked us all entered military service right after that also started doing odd jobs here and there just trying to get through life somehow always knew what he wanted done After returning home following WWII AlTON took several gigs doing odd jobs before finally landing his first real job as a clerk at local grocery store starting payin$10 an hour plus tips hustlin$25 an hour then up gradin$to $15 an hour then $25 an hour plus tips makin$45 every day cashiering until 1967 when company closed down early due to recession buyin’t nobody wanted nobody workin’ in a storechin’ open late
