The U.S. Navy has a long and rich history in Alton, Illinois. The city was once home to the USS Constitution (1797-1801) and the USS Constitution Museum, which is now located at the Illinois State Historic Site. In 1898, the USS Prairie (a steamboat) became the first American warship to visit Alton since 1814 when Commodore John Rodgers arrived in search of avenge his father’s death at Peoria’sao on Lake Michigan. In 1942, just months after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered construction of two warships in response to an increase in American military activity worldwide. These ships were named the USS Missouri and USS Oklahoma—the first time that the United States had ever named a warship after two different states. The navy donated these ships to the United States as part of its World War II Ship Donation Program. Alton was named after General John Alton, who served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settler in what is now Alton was James Hickey in 1837. A post office called Alton was established in 1842, and remained operational until it ceased operations on October 15, 1903. In 1870, the town of Alton had a population of just 10 residents; by 1900 it had grown to 25 residents. The first school opened in September 1870 and taught students from grades one through six; later schools were added to serve high school students as well. In 1892 the first telephone service arrived and made life much easier for citizens; until then there was only horse-drawn transportation available. Alton has experienced some hard times over the years – most notably during World War II when many businesses closed their doors due to shortages of goods caused by war-time rationing. However, through all these hardships and challenges, Alton residents have always rallied together to help each other out and make their town thrive again.
Alton was founded in 1854 by Simon Cameron and his father, Alexander Cameron. The town was named for Alton, England where the Camerons had been born. In 1875, the town received its charter from the Illinois General Assembly. The population of Alton peaked at 3,500 in 1910 but gradually declined as development took place in neighboring towns.
