The city's history can be traced back to when a group of fishermen from Alton decided to set up their own trading post on the river bank. They named their post "The Landing" and began selling products they caught from the river. Over time, The Landing grew into ahub for commerce in this small community. In 1921, The Landing was bought by J.P. Morgan and renamed "Morgan Street". It continued to be used as a financial center until 1978 when it was sold to Sears Holdings Corporation and became Sears department store number 2200. They decided to settle on a farm near present-day Alton. Sprague's initial goal was to provide opportunity for himself and his fellow colonists but eventually he became interested in education as well. He started a school which quickly became successful despite difficult weather conditions that caused students to miss classes often due to snowdrifts or frozen groundcoverings necessary for instruction In 1829 he donated land adjacent to his farm so that new residents could build their homes without having first taken out mortgages or shares in the enterprise In 1830sprague married Lucy Higginson (1810-1879). They had six children: Amos (1831-1912), Edward (1833-1914), George (1835-1900), Anna (1837-1927),and Eliza Jane Sprague (born 1840). In 1836 Sprague organized what would become known as "the first Mechanics' Institute" which provided instruction on various trades including engineering and mechanics architecturallyspeaking this building still stands today on Main Street across from the library) In 1840 sprague purchased 3 lots adjoining his farm for $1 per acre which formed what would become known as "the West Side." This area included Willow Grove Cemetery where he built what are now two homes side by side; one currently used as a church and another currently occupied by State Farm Insurance Company HQ
