Alton is an Elgin, Illinois town founded in 1836 by white settlers. Alton became a city in 1907 and has since been located in the Quad Cities area of southern Illinois. The city was named after General James Alton, who served as a commander in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first Europeans to visit what is now Alton were Frenchmen and Swiss traders, who explored the area in 1695-96. In 1778, English explorer John Clark discovered a river system that led from Lake Michigan to this region. After exploring this new land for several years, Clark arrived at what is now Alton on July 8, 1779. He named his discovery "Albion" for General James Alton, who had earlier fought for America against British forces. In 1836, when Indiana became a state and Kansas was admitted as a state too, both states shared one county with Elgin County – Illinois. The county seat of Elgin County was moved from Carbondale to Winnetka in 1859 due to population growth within the county and because Carbondale had no suitable location for an appellate court or other governmental buildings. When Illinois separated from Indiana on January 1st, 1867 (two years after Chicago), Carbondale remained part of Indiana while Elgin County became Cook County; Cook County would become Chicago's charter city on December 6th of that year. On November 3rd of 1881, Captain J M Cloughman organized the First National Bank at what is now called Main Street corner Third Avenue in downtown Alton; Cloughman was President of the bank from its organization until his death on October 15th of that year aged 73 years old. On December 12th of that year saw another major event when Judge John Fenton issued Order No 5476 establishing Township 3 North which included most along present day Elm Street extending eastward past today's high school building - including much current downtown real estate including parts of today's State Capitol Building! This measure set off considerable development within said township over time culminating with today’s City Hall at Elm & Dearborn Streets cornering West Side Highway

Alton was founded in 1827 by Daniel Boone and his wife Judith as a trading post on the Kankakee River. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period and reached its peak in 1850 with a population of 11,000 people. However, by 1860 Alton had shrunk to 1,500 people due to declines in agricultural production and heavy manufacturing activity in nearby Decatur and Rock Island counties. In 1865, Alton was merged into the larger city ofChicago.
