Alton, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 58,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Illinois after Chicago. Alton was founded by Englishman James K. Polk and his family in 1836 as an agricultural community on a bluff overlooking the Des Plaines River. The name "Alton" was chosen because it means "place whereon trees grow." The first store in Alton opened its doors on December 12, 1836, and Jno. Fenton bought what became known as the Fenton Store and Trading Post at 9th and Dearborn Streets from John Amos Smith.
