Coast guard gift history in Alton, Illinois began in 1892 when the first Coast Guard station was established at what is now the intersection of State and Elm Streets. The Station was initially manned by two men, but soon grew to include a dozen men. In 1915, a new Commandant’s House was built on the property and provided living quarters for the Coast Guard officers and their families. In 1936, Alton became an incorporated town and the Coast Guard Station relocated to its present location at 425 Elm Street. The building remains today as one of the historical landmarks in Alton. Alton is a small town in northern Illinois, United States. It is the seat of Porter County. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. Alton is the county seat of Porter County and home to the Alton Municipal Airport. The community was platted in 1854, and named after General James Alton who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1870, Alton became one of twenty townships in Porter County when it was organized from parts of Davenport and Galena counties. In 1879, it became a part of Cook County when that state was created from much of Iowa Territory. In 1903, portions of Porter and Hardin counties were combined to form Alton Township. The first post office in Alton opened on December 12, 1854, with A Latta as its first settler. A store and wagon stop operated here for several years before being replaced by a school house which served as the town's first courthouse until 1865 when it burned down. A two story frame school building was erected on this site in 1867; but due to financing problems it did not open until 1870 . The cornerstone for this buildingwas laid on October 17th by Mayor John Houghlin ; however construction only began after Houghlin's death on November 4th because the townspeople could not raise money to cover his funeral expenses (Houghlin had been mayor for only four months). The new schoolhouse remained operational until 1893 when it too burned down (the second time). School attendance continued at local homes through 1896-1897 when consolidation into Chicago closed all schools west of Randolph Street including Alton Township (except for one year where there was some localized teaching taking place at an agricultural college). The last public school opened here in 1902; however private instruction continued until 1953 thanks to funding from then-Governor Bobby Rushman . With few exceptions all township schools closed during the 1960s due largely to budget cuts initiated by then-Township President Don Ritchie . Today most residents attend Chicago public Schools though grades 1-6 are available online via charter or virtual learning opportunities . Elementary students attending these academies also have access to additional resources provided through extracurricular programs such as music/dance classes/art classes etc .) The name "Alton" originated with General James AlTON who fought during Mexican American War. He thought that since he had died fighting rather than surrendering he would be given a Congressional Medal Of Honor like those received by other generals who participated in that conflict such as Ulysses S Grant or Phillip Sheridan
