Alton and his brigadier general's quartered here during the American Civil War. As of the 2010 census, Alton had a total area of , all land. The first settler in what is now Alton was John White who arrived on a small boat from Holland on May 12, 1829. He built a cabin on the banks of the Kankakee River where he named it "White's Landing". Other early settlers included David Crouch and Joseph Bigham. 1st Ward Alderman Isaac Goodrich organized township 025 (northwest corner of present day Cook County) November 1, 1830 under Act No 3135 entitled “An act to organize this township†which provides: “That there be erected within this Township two Miles square (or rather an acre), or thereabouts, one hundred and thirty five feet wide by fifty feet long….†This tract including current site of City limits lay within modern day Uniontown Township until that township was organized as part of Cook County on January 1, 1889 pursuant to acts passed by the General Assembly at its meeting on December 7th & 8th (). 2nd Ward Alderman Israel Ziegler also organized township 025 (northwest corner of present day Cook County) November 1, 1830 under Act No 3135 entitled “An act to organize this Township†which provides: “That there be erected within this Township two Miles square (or rather an acre), or thereabouts…one hundred and thirty five feet wide by fifty feet long….†This tract including current site of City limits lay within modern day Libertyville Township until that township was organized as part of Cook County on January 1st (), making it one-half mile east from today's downtown Alton location just south of I-480/I-94 between those expressway exits). In March 1853 James Ewing established store #2 near present day Main Street and North Avenue; however store failed due to low demand for goods then available from other stores in town. Store operated successfully for four months before being closed by local officials due to lack resources necessary to sustain business

Alton, Illinois is a small town in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,969 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Alton was founded on April 3, 1868 by John H. Alton and his brother-in-law Daniel Whetstone. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer during the Indian Wars. The first business in Alton was a grocery store operated by J.H. Alton and Brothers from 1868 to 1870 (the store closed due to competition from a larger store opened by Julius Kahn). In 1870, A & P Grocery opened with Wm Henson as owner and manager until his death in 1886; then it was run by A&P's sons Harry and Reuben for 54 years until it closed in 1976 due to bankruptcy. In 1916, the city of Chicago annexed parts of Kane County so that Alton would become part of the new City of Chicago; however, this annexation did not take effect until 1978 when Cook County reorganized its land divisions into departments which included Kane County within Cook County proper rather than including all of southern Kane County within the newly created City of Chicago proper as planned. In 1933, Mayor James Mankiewicz set up an economic development committee which recommended that Alton be placed within one of three areas –Normal Heights or Lawndale –based on their potential commercial potential alone rather than based on their location within Kane County as proposed by Mayor Mankiewicz himself because Normal Heights had more developed infrastructure while Lawndale lacked such amenities (normal Heights ultimately became the town's largest settlement). On January 25th, 1934, following months of debate and community consultations led by Mayor Mankiewicz, Normal Heights were chosen over Lawndale as the new comprehensive local government center for all south suburban districts north of 75th Street; this decision removed any remaining vestiges of geographical diversity among South Side communities before they were forced Integration under colorblind guidelines promulgated by outside organizations such as Fascist Italy's Ministrycracy No. 10 undersecretary Cesare Battelli starting in 1938 (later elevated to office under Joseph Stalin), resulting in dramatic landscape changes throughout much south suburbia following World War II Americanization policies overseen by various United States Officeholders elapsed since President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9066 mandating "Elimination Of Racial Differences In All walks Of Life" across federal jurisdictions during World War I through plans initiatedby Assistant Secretary For Domestic Affairs Herbert Hoover working directly with fellow Assistant Secretary Woodrow Wilson - both men were direct descendants of Draconian Puritanical Anglican ministers who believed that whites only could rule blacks if they converted to Christianity becoming "white Aryans". This policy change effectively ended African slavery throughout most northern America leading many freed slaves northerners also considered racially inferior and/or automatically ineligible for citizenship based on their color notwithstandingmastery over them prioritizing white interests above black interests - an issue still relevant today despite recent political moves toward multiculturalism spearheaded primarily by Democratic Party presidential nominee Hillary Clinton - leading some former slaves today seeking affirmative action programs targeted towards them individuals born outside America regardless legal status which inherently disadvantages them financially compared to those natives born inside America who enjoy full access to social welfare programs offered without discrimination against minorities
