The Alton Air Force Base in Illinois is home to the 1st Fighter Wing, which is responsible for providing air support for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The wing has a rich history dating back to World War II. In 1941, Alton was the birthplace of Colonel James W. Gavin who was instrumental in founding the United States Air Force. The wing currently flies F-16 Fighting Falcons, which are among the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world. In 2007, General Stanley McChrystal directed Alton AFB to deploy two F-15 Eagle fighter jets as part ofOperation Noble Eagle. This deployment marked the first time an air force had sent aircraft into combatOperation Noble Eagle took place off Iraq's coast on March 24th 2007 and lasted until April 3rd 2007 aerial refueling operations were also conducted during this time period by KC-135 Stratotanker Aircraft Additionally, three KC-130 Hercules tanks were Donationed from Douglas Aircraft Company These helicopters relieved American military aircraft flown by Royal Jordanian Air Force during this time period

Alton, Illinois was one of the first places in the United States to deploy an air force gift history. On December 17, 1953, they deployed a C-46 Globemaster III aircraft to Alton Municipal Airport as part of the Air Forceside Christmas party celebration. The plane was filled with presents for local civilians and military personnel from all over the United States.
Alton, Illinois is an unincorporated community in Alton Township, LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. It lies on the railroad tracks between Alton and Carbondale. The population was 2,693 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Alton was a man named Fenton who arrived in 1836. A post office called Fenton was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1845 James Sutherlin founded a Semi-Permanent Agricultural Colony near Carbondale with other investors. The colony failed due to lack of resources and competition from neighboring settlements. However, this experience helped Sutherlin develop his business acumen and become one of the leading entrepreneurs of his day. He moved his family to Carbondale in 1851 after finding land for them along the Sangamon River there. In 1865 he became involved with another early settler named Hays when Hays donated land to build a school which would serve as an inspiration for future schools throughout LaSalle County. In 1870 John Carver bought property east of town from Sutherlin; Carver later served as mayor of Alton from 1939 to 1941 and 1948 to 1951). During this time period Alton boasted two banks (the Banking Company of America and First National Bank) as well as two grocery stores (Granite Grocery Co./Fenton's), four churches (First Presbyterian/Stroudsburg Methodist Church/Lincoln United Methodist Church/Cathedral Catholic Parish), three hotels including the Hotel Belcourt (later renamed the Belmont), six restaurants including Paddy's Irish Pub/Munster House Cafe/Rudy's ItalianRestaurant/, tensmithsmithsmith shop/, eleven coal mines (), four sawmills (), one hat factory (), five blacksmiths (). The post office closed on October 15th 1957 due to low mail volume; however, local residents continued sending their mail via UGS rural delivery service until 1959 when that service ended too also due to low mail volume.. After that date all letters were sent through ChicagoMail facilities until 1969 when USPS began providing rural deliveries within LaSalle County again.. Today remnants of some old businesses still remain such as Granite Grocery Co./Fenton's restaurant but most activity now takes place at Rudy's Italian Restaurant which has been around since 1978

Nixon'sardon announced his decision not to seek re-election, United States Air Force General Curtis LeMay delivered a scathing attack on then U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen before an audience of more than one thousand people at AFHQ's Officers' Club located at Maxwell AFB near Montgomery Alabama as part of a "costs and benefits" study conducted on behalf of congressional leaders seeking appropriations for defense programs next year caused by budget irregularities which were becoming apparent within DoD despite protestations from Defense Department officials about possible government malfeasance in connection with Watergate scandal; LeMay charged that "the whole Goddamn system is rotten". The display included reproductions of artwork depicting various aspects of Air Force life during World War II including models of bomber aircraft used over Japan and Korea; examples from various unit insignia; black & white photos chronicling individual accomplishments throughout Air Force history; charts listing Project Mercury achievements; letters written by individuals associated withAF during this period including First Lieutenant Don Armstrong who was Marine Corps radar operator on board USS Enterprise during Gemini mission that demonstrated feasibility and effectiveness of advanced Visibility/Infrared Technology being developed by AF under Project Gemini project name: 'Gemini III'; General Walter Bedell Smith who served as Commanding General Ninth Tactical Wing at Iwakuni AB Japan during atomic bombingcampaign against Hiroshima
Alton is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,451 at the 2000 census. Alton is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The townsite of Alton was platted in 1837 by John P. Hennigan and James Ralston. It became a city on March 24, 1903 when it merged with neighboring village of North Alton to form the new city of Alton. The merger was approved by the state government and took effect on April 1, 1903. Alton's first manufacturing industry was meatpacking; however, this changed after World War II when large truckloads of cheap chicken arrived from overseas and led to the demise of local retail meatpacking businesses in favor of international chicken companies such as Tyson Foods (now known as Tyson Foods Inc.) and Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation. After several years during which industrial jobs dried up due to technological advances such as mass production methods using computers that could automate work, Alton regained some manufacturing activity with the opening in 1984 of two aluminum smelters supplying Arizona Aluminum Company with aluminum for products like car parts and roofing tiles; this activity stopped again following a fires that destroyed both plants in 1988).
