The Larkins were local farmers who grew corn, wheat, and other crops on their farmstead. They also raised hogs and dogs and stored their food in an old barn that they used as a garage. In 1854, six years after the donation from the Larksins, the first gun shop was founded in Alsip by George Wilshere. At first, Wilshere sold guns only to residents of Alsip. However, over time he enlarged his shop to include items for sale outside of Alsip as well. By 1870, Wilshere had two stores in Alsip with 250+ customers. In 1875, Elisha Peck opened up his own store next door to Wilshere’s store and soon became one of the most important gun dealers in town. Soon enough, other dealers came into business around town: John Gorman opened up his store on State Street in 1886; Amos Gorman established a store at 4th Street & Western Avenue in 1888; Julius Weininger opened up his store at 5th Street & Western Avenue in 1890; Harry Hirschman set-up shop at 6th Street & Western Avenue in 1893; Jens Sohlgren started selling ammo at 7th Street & Western Avenue in 1896; and finally Adolphus Heitz open his shop on 8thStreet &Western Ave., which became known as Heitz’ Gun Shop later that year (Heitz 1895). Over time more shops cropped up: A&W Armory opened its doors on 9thStreet & Western Ave.; Pillsbury Armory Ltd.-opened its doors on 10thStreet &Western Ave.; Germania Arms Store-opened its doors on 11stStreet & Western Ave.; Armoury Guns Inc.-opened its doors on 12ndStreet&Western Ave.; Mail Order Firearms Supply Co.-opened its doors on 14thStreet &Western Ave., etc.). During this time period there were many different types of firearms available for purchase including handguns (which at this point were still considered novelty items), rifles (of all types including shotguns and rifle traps), ammunition (including both hunting ammunition and self-defense ammo), pistols (including revolvers and breechloaders) as well as shotgun accessories such as stocks/stocksets/gripes etc.. Alsip is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the east side of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of the oldest municipalities in Kane County. Alsip was founded in 1836 by German immigrants, and it became an incorporated village in 1903. The population of Alsip was 953 at the 2010 census. The Village of Alsip was organized on October 1, 1903 as a result of a referendum by the people of Kane County. Its first president was John Hagan. The original plat for Alsip showed that there were two parcels of land—one measuring 3 acres (1 hectare) and one measuring 11/2 acres (5 hectares). These parcels were part of the larger Town site which had been surveyed across seven townships northward from Chicago by George Stephenson in 1829-30. On July 10, 1836, three men named Adam Weckerly, Johann Wenzel Nitschke and Simon Ziemba negotiated to purchase 2/3 acre (0.8 hectare) from Nicholas D’Angelo for $200 ($4 per capita). They sold their patent for 6 miles long (10 km) wide strip on Cook Avenue extending from Wabash Avenue east to Kedzie Avenue south to Racine Street west to Woodbine Road between State Street and Dearborn Road where it met with another grant from Nicholas D’Angelo for 500 feet wide straight street running east-west connecting with Wabash Avenue at its intersection with Racine Street; this grant ran along what is now Canal Park Drive between State Street and Dearborn Road. This grant made possible improvements such as building lots on either side of Cook Ave., then filling these holes with earth until they reached today's Paseo de la Cruz Boulevard parkway roadway Extension! Adam Weckerly died suddenly while farming his allotment near Alsip on April 12th 1830 leaving behind his wife Catharine DePuy who purchased 5/8 acre (2 hectares) adjoining her husband's estate beginning settlement proceedings dated March 26th 1830; settlement including boundary line changes resulting in addition 1 1/2 more acres comprising present day North Side Drive & West Side Drive & East Side Drive streetscape & alley now frontingNorth Side Drve.; Catharine DePuy also acquired title deed to unnamed lot #7 south of current day First St NW corner lot 7 ½' X 43 ½' ; lot number unknown at time this document was prepared particular due to fire damage suffered by catharine's home Janurary 3rd 1840 when numerous oil lamps burning inside destroyed most all contents inside house - property appraisal estimated value at $4000 In November 1835 Adam Weckerly's son Nicholas Weckerly married Catharine DePuy giving rise to the family name De Puy alias Weckerley which still exists today (& their home still stands)! On August 29th 1839 Justus Lutz bought 8 rods or 0.50 acre(0 leasehold interest)) directly next door to widow Catharine De Puy formerly Justus Lutz Greenbaum prior thereto known as Lot No.? On February 14th 1840 John Bakewell leased 2/3acre(1 hectare), bounded northerly by Ashland avenue & westerly by Coles road towards Forest Preserve thence easterly along said avenue unto Whitehall road thence northwest along said road unto Nowhere farmstead
