Alsip is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. Alsip was founded in 1871 by German immigrants, and has been a village since 1907. The community is located at the intersection of Illinois Routes 22 and 96. Alsip was one of many villages along the Great Lakes region that were destroyed during the Panic of 1893. In 1902, Alsip's post office closed after only five years in operation due to low mail volume. However, Alsip remained an important center for agricultural production until it lost its status as a village in 1907. The village had two churches: the Evangelical Lutheran Synod Church (1872) and a Methodist Episcopal Church (1902). A small commercial district developed around the schoolhouse until it closed in 1984 due to lack of demand from residents. Since 2007, Alsip has been home to a community garden which offers environmental education opportunities to children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
