Alsip, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,851. Alsip is located on the border of Cook and DuPage Counties. It is east of Chicago and north-west of Aurora. The village was founded by Germans in 1847 as "Winona." In 1871, Alsip became part of the newly created city of Chicago. The village has a total area of , all land. The only water source is a small stream that flows through the center of town. The village's economy revolves around agriculture and services such as health care and education. Alsip's history dates back to 1847 when German settlers arrived in what is now Alsip Township on the then undiscovered edge of Cook County near present-day Aurora. Of these people, many were farmers who traveled to various parts of America looking for new territory to settle because Illinois was already inhabited by Native Americans at this time. They named their settlement Winona after one of their families' homes in Germany where they had resided for some time before moving westward on their way to New York City across Lake Michigan during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1871, when Chicago was established as an independent city limits with its own government, Winona become part of it along with much other rural area within its boundaries including Alsip Township which lay just east side Chicago’s first line that day following victory over General John Wayne at Colombus Heights outside Dearborn Park (now University Village). Today’s streetscape remains largely unchanged since then with a few exceptions; notably US 24A running through downtown from south side towards Madison Avenue/Lake Shore Drive crosses Main Street just south-east/southwest (the old alignment) between First Congregational Church – built in 1865 on Locust Street - now used as office space for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Office Buildings complex off West Grand Boulevard – blocks from current site where earlier City Hall building once stood - location also served as home field stadium for local high school teams dating back to 1886 until that venue closed down after World War II; while diagonal US 24I runs concurrently through north side Commercial Center corridor from South Side Business District past Federal Building plaza into Loop (heights), today Science Centre Plaza would have been located there if it not for redevelopment project currently underway adjacent thereto involving demolition/replacement or renovation/addition to existing Sears Tower structure currentlybmking adjacent thereto across State Street from former Wrigley Field property now occupied by Phillips 66 energy storage plant operated by Calumet Energy Corporation vaults associated therewith

Alsip is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,694 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Chicago and the largest city of its kind in the Midwest. Alsip is also one of two cities in Cook County with a total metropolitan area population over 100,000 residents (the other being Bloomingdale). The first permanent settlers in what would become Alsip were three men from New York who arrived on an American brigantine called HMS America on November 11, 1795. They named their new land "Alsip" after their homes in Amsterdam, Netherlands that they had visited previous year while on their way to explore what lay beyond New Netherland. The first town meeting was held on December 5, 1795 and elected James Hardin as mayor. The first building built in what would become Alsip was the Old Schoolhouse which was constructed by Peter Henshaw and John Armstrong around 1802-1803. Henshaw served as high school principal until his death in 1824 ertaining to this date remains the longest continuous holding position ever held by any person at Henshaw Academy during that time period In 1827 Isaac Miller founded a sawmill that became one of Alsip's early businesses engaged primarily in retailing lumber to local farmers and others throughout Cook County
