However, over time the town has bounced back several times and currently has a population of around 9,000 people (which includes 1 resident on the reservation). Many of these residents are descendants of those who originally came to Algonquin during its heyday in the 1850s and 1860s – including General Hawkburn himself. In addition to its primary industry being agriculture (almonds are one such crop), Algonquin also produces cheese and other food items; it also hosts occasional events such as arts festivals or concerts.
