The Algonquin, Illinois Army National Guard (AGuard) has been deployed to various locations in the country for over 50 years. This cannon was used by the club during their annual rifle or pistol competition at Camp Randall in Springfield, Illinois.

Algonquin was laid out in 1836 by Colonel John Fiske and his brother-in-law Captain George Stephenson as a small village on the shores of Lake Michigan. The first white settler in Algonquin was Samuel Morse who came overland from Green Bay in 1837 and built a cabin on the banks of the Des Plaines River. Other early settlers included Amos Kendall, Jabez Bowen, Nicholas Backus, James Stewart (the inventor of stereoscopic viewing), and Ebenezer Scrooge. A post office was established at Algonquin in 1840; it was renamed Woodstock in 1888 after Levi Loomis Woodward, an early real estateman and political figure who helped develop Algonquin into a town. The railroad arrived in 1856 and quickly changed the nature of life within Algonquin; it became one of the leading transportation hubs within Cook County. In addition to its role as an economic center, Algonquin also became known for its many manufacturing enterprises – including munitions plants – which contributed to its nickname "The Arsenal of Democracy." The depression years saw dramatic declines in business activity throughout much of North America but not so among businesses located near Chicago; instead, they prospered thanks to aggressive marketing campaigns by local businessmen such as Harry Chandler and other entrepreneurs associated with what is now called "the City Slickers." Despite this resilience during tough times, however, by 1970 Algonquin's GDP had fallen by 30% from its peak $136 million achieved just two decades earlier. However some positive changes have been wrought since then: most notablyan increase in population (+10%) due to migration from surrounding communities during the 1990s; rising levels of education (+29%); and recent investment totaling more than $1 billion across various sectors that has led to steady progress both economically and socially speaking since 2000–a trend that is expected to continue well into the future given current trends emanating from downtown Chicago . Additionally there has been an increased focus on cultural attractions such as music festivals or art shows taking place around downtown while new bars/nightlife joints have opened up throughout what used to be mainly agricultural areas providing tempting options for nightlife visitors looking for something differentiating them from other parts of Cook County
