Algonquin is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,640 at the 2010 census. Algonquin is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Algonquin was Nicholas Montague in 1814. He ranched land north of present-day Algonquin and built a log cabin there. In 1827, John Fitch set up a sawmill on the river near where Aluminum Road now intersects I-94. In 1830, Daniel Boone reached Kankakee from Illinois via the Winnetka River and discovered this area of central Illinois which he named "Finch Township" after himself and his partner James Michener. In 1833, when Amos Kendall purchased most of Fitch Township from Fitch for $4,000, he also acquired title to all or part of what would become Algonquin Township from Nicholas Montague . Kendall founded Kendall's Mills here in 1840 with four acres (1 km²) of ground bought from Montague . Algonquin became an enclave within Kendall's mill town until it was annexed by Chicago in 1847 following the purchase by Anthony Wayne of Kankakee Township from David Sills for $10,000 (). Chicago annexed Algonquin due to its proximity to the city center and its share of rail lines; however many residents continued to live there even after annexation because they lacked property rights within Chicago’s limits. The name "Algonquin" originated with early settlers who called their settlement "Alocuin". They were probably descendants of French Huguenots who had settled in what is now northeastern Illinois during the 17th century. Although some historians argue that “Alocuin” may have been derived more directly from Native American word alcala meaning “meadow” or “field” rather than European name given its similarity to those words), historical evidence does suggest that English speakers used this spelling during earliest times when they encountered it populated by Catholic Frenchmen living nearby on the Mississippian (Mississippi) Peninsula
