Small batch coffee history in Addison, Illinois began with the first coffee roaster on Main Street in 1861. The shop was run by Mr. and Mrs. John Atherton, who roasted a variety of beans for their customers at home. In 1868, Mr. Atherton set up his own business, which continued to operate until 1926. From that time until 1971, Addison's only commercial roaster was the John Atherton Coffee Company. During those years, Addison saw an increase in small-batch coffee production as new cafes opened up throughout the city. In 1971, however, the company went out of business due to competition from larger operators and lack of support from the community. However, over time smaller operations have come back to life in Addison - most notably The Local Roastery (which reopened in 2013). Today there are several small-batch coffee businesses operating within walking distance of each other in Addison – making it one of the most vibrant small towns in Illinois!
